Meet Scott Power of Not Real Art and Crewest Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Power.

Scott, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Life was tough growing up because I was sick a lot. I had Meniere’s disease. Spinal meningitis almost killed me and left me deaf in my left ear. I also had Pneumonia twelve times by the age of ten. I was very creative though. I drew a lot. Eventually I performed in school plays and musicals. Played alto saxophone and studied jazz and classical music at a high level. I once earned a perfect score at state competition playing a Tschaikowsky Sonata by memory.

I was born in the rust belt of America: Gary, Indiana. My parents were working class, salt-of-the-earth types. My maternal grandfather was a minister, so I grew up going to church every Sunday. My grandfather wanted me to go seminary and become a minister like him. I did not.

Travel has always been a core value of mine. I have been lucky enough to travel to 38 countries on 4 continents. When I was 20, I moved north, near the Arctic Circle, and built a log cabin. I lived there for ten months like Grizzly Adams without any utilities or communications. I had to carry a gun to defend against polar bears and black bears. I hunted and butchered a bull moose for my meat.

I work in the visual arts professionally. I’ve created market-leading brands, products, and content for many companies including Coca-Cola, Instagram, Microsoft and Procter & Gamble. I’m an award-winning entrepreneur and hold two design patents. I have completed 2x Ironman triathlons and am a proud member of The Explorers Club.

I’ve written books and spoken at many conferences. I have served on the Board of Directors for the International Association of Medical Assistance to Travelers (IAMAT) in Toronto, Canada and also served on the board at The Center for Biological Diversity in Tucson, AZ.

As co-founder of Crewest Studio, a creative communications company based in LA, I currently work to celebrate and elevate Creative Culture with media-centric programming that entertains, inspires and informs. As an artist, I work under the pseudonym, Sourdough. My current body of work is titled, NOT REAL ART. It is performance-based and experiential in nature. You can check it out at www.NotRealArt.com.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has not always been smooth. I was a pretty sick kid and being deaf in my left ear has always been an obstacle to manage.

Certainly being born a straight white male gave me privileges my gay friends and friends of color did not have. That said, my family was working class, didn’t have money and were conservative. I am dreamer and liberal by nature. I had big dreams and ideas for my life which my family did not always understand or appreciate. This caused me to feel alienated, lonely and unsupported. To accomplish my dreams, I had to forge my own path. I had to break out from my family’s values and stand up for my own.

I’ve had challenges and failures in business too. Corrupt partners who lied, cheated and stole. Employees who screwed up important projects. Big deals that didn’t come through. Clients who didn’t pay. Truth is, when you are trying to innovate and do new things, struggle and failure come with the territory.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
As a creative professional, Los Angeles is a great place to live and work. That said, I always tell people the secret to living in Los Angeles is to minimize your drive time so try to live close to your work place. Being stuck on the 405 sucks!
