Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Postl.
Scott, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started as a freight broker with a company called Coyote Logistics. This was my initial proper touch with the contagious energy Chicago had to offer. I was awed by its beautiful infrastructure which eventually leads me to purchase my first camera. I never considered myself a photographer, rather someone who was finding ways to not only discover more of the city but also find new ways to spend my time. I would work during the day, shoot at night, and on the weekends, I would meet up with local shooters and explore the city. I eventually transitioned into an IT role helping manage the company’s software releases. This was pivotal to my overall mindset and paradigm to what my life could look like. I proved to myself that with acute focus and help from your peers, you can pursue any career path. While deep-diving into the IT department, I used this momentum to also deep dive into the photography world on off-hours.
Eventually, that was the bane of my existence, if I wasn’t working in the office, I was shooting, editing, researching, and finding ways to create. Through time, I was booking enough work to convince myself I wanted to go full time. So like most creatives who are serious about growing, I moved to LA. The same day I landed, I shot my first music video and the rest is history. I now divide my time producing independent projects with musicians, artists, and athletes around the world. With getting on commercial sets in LA.
Has it been a smooth road?
This was not a smooth road by any means. If it was, was it really worth it? Like all creatives who are young in the industry, I struggled to find my voice that would be felt through my work. Meanwhile, I was living out of my Jeep on an air mattress snuggled in a tiny bedroom. I was super grateful to have that space to snuggle in at night, “Thank you Thomas”. Waking up on deflated air mattress, using a kitchen that wasn’t mine and changing clothes out of my Jeep was humbling and necessary for my gratitude muscles. Eventually, I moved to San Diego to have my own place. Through this time was computing every week to work in LA while couch surfing. “Thank you Sterling and Meg”. Through all this, I am competing with the best filmmakers in the world soaking up as much information as I can improve my creative process. There were many months that did not promise any income, as you are aware, this industry host a lot of favors. “Hey, shoot this for free, and it’ll give you the portfolio to get a paying client”. Every month I woke up with a 30-day mindset. I have 30 days to find multiple people who want their story told through motion pictures.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am in the business of telling stories through motion pictures. Never heard that before right? I specialize in independent musicians, artists, athletes and activists. I am most proud of being able to elevate and co-exist with someone’s vision bring their stories to life. My ability to build relationships first, and execute second would be what sets apart from others. My clients are also my friends. I am able to accomplish this through spending quality time with them outside of shooting. There’s something to be said about truly understanding your client as opposed to being a worker bee on a big set through agencies. Getting your client comfortable and feeling genuine is very important to capture those frames that keep you up at night.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
This city host an abundance of resources that will help you grow exponentially faster if you are pursuing filmmaking. I would recommend starting out here, as the moment I moved here, was the moment I was inspired to push the record button every day.
