Meet Scott Page-Pagter of Pagter Brothers Winery in Santa Clarita

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Page-Pagter.

Scott, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started making wine in 1996 with a friend. I decided to make the winery commercial in 2013 so I could sell the wines easier. My friend didn’t want to make the jump then so I got my brother, Gib, to invest so we could get the ball rolling. I have always sourced my grapes from vineyards where I love the wine that is made from grapes that come from there. It’s not so easy to get into a lot of these, but I have been pretty lucky. My first year I made a Syrah from White Hawk vineyard in Santa Ynez and a Pinot from Paso Robles. Started going crazy from there, we’re now making Syrahs, Tempranillo, Grenache, a few blends, Chardonnay, Petit Syrah, Cab and Zinfandels from Paso Robles and Santa Ynez.

As a boutique winery specializing in high quality wines with grapes from top notch vineyards, I realized I couldn’t really sell to stores and wine shops without losing money. I decided to open a tasting room in the revitalized downtown Newhall. I found a partner with the Hoi Polloi winery and we proceeded to build our tasting room. Two wineries sharing a tasting room! We opened in the end of April. We call the place the Double Trouble Wine Room featuring the wines of The Pagter Brothers Winery and The Hoi Polloi Winery.

We’re located at 24338 Main Street, Newhall 91321. Right now, we’re open Thursday – Saturday 5 to 10 and Sunday 2 to 6. We’re in the process of finishing up our patio and have a great place to hang and enjoy our wines. Even though we don’t make food (we are a winery after all) people are welcome to order from the local restaurants or bring their own food in to enjoy with our wines. Tasting fees at $10 for 4 pours.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We had the usual contractor problems and the city was much harder to deal with than we thought, but we fought our way through and finally made it. Everything always takes way longer than you think it will in terms of new businesses.

Pagter Brothers Winery – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a boutique winery specializing in top quality, hand crafted small batch wines from some of the best wine areas in the state. We are really proud of the quality of our wines, we believe they hold up with the best.

We are extremely happy with the responses we’ve gotten from people trying our wines, no wine lover has disliked anything, from either winery. What sets us apart from most wineries is that our big, bold wines are really just grapes and yeast, we try and add the least amount of additives possible. This means that our wines are different each year depending on the weather and other earthly factors and not homogenized with chemicals to make them taste the same year after year.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
In the case of the winery and tasting room, I define success as not losing money and continuing to grow while making the best quality wine. This is not a get rich quick plan, this is a passionate lifestyle.

Pricing:

  • Tasting Fees $10 – $15
