Meet Sarah Mirza and Nida Lakhia of Desi Wardrobe Clean Out in LA/OC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Mirza and Nida Lakhia.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
During the process of moving, we vented about not having enough closet space for both our western and eastern clothes. Being South Asian, we generally require additional closet space for our eastern wardrobe. With spending a good deal of money on clothes, we were conflicted with what to do with them. A lot of times, we would wear something once or twice and it’d be sitting in the closet, a suitcase or a storage bin. Instead of tossing our clothes out, we thought why not give them a new home. Thats when we thought of the concept of creating a platform to sell our desi clothes. We created our Instagram page, @desiwardrobecleanout, and started by posting our outfits hoping we would make some sales. Surprisingly enough, our outfits started to sell quick. We shared our page with family and friends, and fortunately, its popularity grew by word of mouth. Our friends loved the concept and wanted to declutter their closets as well, so we opened our platform to sell others outfits as well.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As the concept is new to us, we’re learning something new every day. We honestly didn’t expect such a large volume of requests to be featured on our page so soon. Our main challenge has been to post all sellers requests on a timely basis and obtaining the best customer service while working full time.

Desi Wardrobe Clean Out – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Desi Wardrobe Clean Out is a platform that has been created to buy and sell brand new and pre-loved south Asian clothes and jewelry. Through our social media presence we have motivated many to step into their closets, declutter clothes they may have never worn or worn once and quickly sell them through us! We’ve helped many find the perfect outfits last minute for their upcoming events by providing reasonably priced suggestions.

We’re humbled and proud of the positive feedback and success in sales we’ve received in such a short amount of time. We only launched in September 2019! We’re catering to a niche community, who otherwise wouldn’t generally wouldn’t have thought to buy or sell preloved clothing. We truly work our hardest to treat and take care of our Instagram community like family. We want to help them sell their clothes through our easy & efficient process and make shopping quick & simple for our buyers.

We are also proud that buying preloved is sustainable and eco-friendly.

We only accept preloved items that are clean, in good condition (no damages or defects!) and require the items are dry cleaned before shipping out!

More recently, in February 2020, we launched a donation initiative! We understand some may not be interested in selling some of their outfits but would like to part with them. We have teamed up with Rosy Foundation to collect donations for women in Northern Pakistan. Outfits collected are distributed to widows and their daughters for weddings, holidays and daily wear.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Everyday is a day to be proud! When we hear positive feedback from our buyers and sellers, we’re proud that our hard work and hustle is paying off!
