Meet Sarah Flora of Flora Brewing in Valley Village

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Flora.

Sarah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started brewing three years ago when I realized that my husband had no interest in the homebrew kit I bought for his birthday. I took to it quickly and haven’t stopped since. I plan on opening a brick and mortar brewery with a taproom in the next few years up in Bremerton, WA. Until then, I will have my beer available at non-profit events and festivals around Los Angeles.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m still on the road to the brewery, so the struggles are very much real. I’m working on trademarking my name now, which is proving more complicated than I ever imagined. The next obstacles to jump are finding retail space, financing an entire brewery, and then applying for a liquor license once everything is in place.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Flora Brewing – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Flora Brewing is a homebrew operation at the moment. I specialize in fruit beers but am expanding to include a larger range of beers made just of hops, water, yeast, and malt. I’m known for my Instagram @flora_brewing. I didn’t realize that when I started my account, people would enjoy following my journey to make beer and start a brewery, but apparently, they do! I’m proud of my journey for the past few years. This all started as a “let’s see if this works” kind of project, and it’s become a huge passion project that I can’t imagine ever stopping. I think what sets me apart from others is that I’m a female brewer and do it all on my own, I’m a bit of a lone wolf at the moment though I know that can’t last once I go commercial.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My future plans are opening a 3.5bbl nano-brewery with a taproom and possibly a restaurant in Bremerton, WA. I’m looking forward to transitioning into brewery full time and it taking over my life (more than it already has).
