Meet Sarah Demonteverde

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Demonteverde.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a Designer and Illustrator in the Greater Los Angeles Area with a Bachelor in Fine Arts in Visual Art, with an Interdisciplinary Emphasis from Azusa Pacific University.

From a young age I was immersed in a multicultural and creative environment and exposed greatly to both visual and performing arts. This creative environment was the catalyst for my love of expressing stories through visual art, and has continued to propel and inspire me to pursue design and illustration in my career journey. I also love Tahitian Dance, playing Hawaiian Slack-Key/Classical Guitar, trying new cuisines, hiking, and being with family.

Experienced in Illustration, Visual Development and Graphic Design, I find inspiration for my art from diverse cultures, new places and unique people. I am not only hungry to know more about the world and people around me – I hope to be able to fully represent as both and advocate for voices that need to be heard, and to be a storyteller for narratives rooted in culture and rich history.

Please tell us about your art.
I am at heart, an illustrator. I have always loved to draw, however the point of inspiration for me changed when I was in college, making me realize the potential to tell stories of both the mundane and the everyday extraordinary. I made it my goal to bring out the vibrancy that is present in our daily lives, whether we notice it or not. Life’s vibrancy was so present for me in the Philippines, in the birthplace of my grandparents. I hope to help bring people together through stories and/or content that speaks to the heart in such a way that helps them better appreciate and understand the diverse world and its cultures around them. A lot of my artwork is culturally inspired by different types of people and their traditions that I find so alluring and beautiful. However, at the end of the day, I hope more so that the stories themselves speak even louder.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I feel like artists are flourishing now more than ever, especially in a time where we are so free to express our every thought and feeling, both digitally and tangibly on a paper, or canvas. I do feel that there is a need to increase the viability and vouch for the fact that although it may not be conventional, art and design careers deserve to be known as successful career paths that not only make things beautiful, but do things in such a way that seeks to problem solve and make a difference just as much as any other profession. I feel that if communities invested more in the creative arts and helped create a network or environment where artists can thrive, connect and create together, more willing artists and creatives would feel even more inspired.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can find my work on instagram.com/ilandtuitles (@ilandtuitles), where I usually update frequently about my art progress, as well as little blurbs about me and my art.
