Meet Sarah Choi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Choi.

Hi Sarah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hi, I’m Sarah Choi, a bridal hair and makeup artist with a passion for helping my clients look and feel their best on their special day. Before I found my calling in the beauty industry, I worked in public accounting for two years. However, my love for makeup started in college, where I found the process of doing makeup to be enjoyable and therapeutic. After realizing that makeup artistry was my true passion, I decided to leave my accounting job and pursue a career in the beauty industry.

To improve my skills as an artist, I traveled to Korea for six months to take classes and learn from some of the best in the industry. During my time in Korea, I discovered a niche in the market that wasn’t being fulfilled in America: makeup artists who specialize in a more natural style. I knew that this was the approach I wanted to bring back with me to help my clients look and feel beautiful in a way that was authentic and true to themselves.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I concluded my studies and moved back to America just as the Covid-19 pandemic started to spread. As a result, my plans were delayed, and I had to put my career aspirations on hold. Instead, I took on a different job for two years to make ends meet. When the pandemic started to slow down, I was determined to get back on track and pursue my passion for makeup artistry. Fortunately, I was able to find a studio that took me in and helped me find suitable clients. I’m excited to be back on the path to achieving my career goals, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My makeup style is all about natural beauty. I believe that brides should look like themselves on their wedding day, just with a bit of enhancement to their best features. To achieve this, I focus on creating a lightweight, radiant base that helps brides feel the best in their own skin rather than feeling like they have caked on makeup. I also believe that skincare is a crucial step in the makeup process, so I spend some time ensuring that my client’s skin is well-prepared. By prioritizing natural beauty and skincare, I’m able to create a look that is both stunning and authentic, allowing my clients to feel confident and beautiful on their special day.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
When starting out in the makeup industry, it can be incredibly helpful to look for a studio or artist in your area that you can work under. As a visual learner, watching experienced artists work their magic and seeing their techniques in action can be incredibly beneficial. Not only can you learn practical tips and tricks that you can incorporate into your own work, but you can also gain a valuable mentor and role model.
