Meet Saquoia Cox of Make It Make Cents

Today we’d like to introduce you to Saquoia Cox.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Saquoia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a 27 year old from Miami, FL with a passion for learning and helping others. I grew up in a single-family household to an immigrant mother that instilled values of hard work, discipline, and perseverance. Even though I had ten full-ride scholarships to schools in Florida, I decided to pursue a degree in Accounting at Bay Path University.

I had never been up north and just wanted to see how others lived in the world around me. During this time, I did not want to cause any financial strain on my family, so I found ways to make money on top of a loaded schedule. During my first year of college, I started a business called CSS or College Student Services with two of my friends that I met that year. We cleaned dorm rooms, washed clothes and cleaned cars on campus. During the first year of our business, we ended up racking in $20,000 in revenue when it only took $50 to start the business. Following that, I always worked three jobs at a time from being a Resident Assistant to Cafe worker to help cut the costs of school. After obtaining my bachelor’s in accounting, I went on to get to an MS in Accounting and an MBA.

I am currently studying to become a Certified Public accountant and I will be starting another program for nonprofit management and philanthropy in October 2020. January 2017 was a very tough year for as my mom passed away at the age of 54 due to health complications, but from what I have learned from her, it has helped me to strive for greatness and still do things in my life that she would be proud of. September 1st, I am launching another passion project of mine called Make it Make Cents. Our mission at Make it Make Cents is to inspire, motivate and provide others with the tools and resources they need to improve their personal finances. With my knowledge as an accountant and the lessons from my mother, I want to help and inspire others to take control of their own lives.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it has not been an easy road, as I’ve had to deal with a job loss back in 2018. I was without my main source of income for about four months and it took a while for unemployment to kick in. Even with all my degrees, it did not open any doors because I did not have the experience and the jobs that I did qualify for I was “overqualified.” It was a mentally taxing time as I am single woman living by myself in a place with no family.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Make It Make Cents – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Make It Make Cents is here to provide simple and easy financial solutions to individuals struggling with making and sticking with a budget, paying off debt, and saving for emergencies. We provide you with tools that work for you and your lifestyle. What sets us apart is from other companies/ people like Dave Ramsey is that we are giving useful financial advice from minority women who don’t have it all together. Most of the stories that I hear or read always come from the perspective of a “family with children” and never from the single woman who wants to fix her life on her own. My partner is a Hispanic woman, recently engaged with a newborn and she provides a valuable perspective for young moms. We are not sitting from our thrones telling you what to do, we are right there with you telling you the tips and tricks that you need to have a stable foundation in your life.
