Today we’d like to introduce you to Sangita Paul.
Hi Sangita, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Originally from the Northeast, I’ve called Los Angeles home for nearly 15 years. After earning a degree in physics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a 12 year career in electrical engineering, I decided to follow my true passion for art.
My love for design began with creating flyers, pamphlets, and posters for school events. My big break came when friends asked me to manage social media for their restaurant businesses, which lead to redesigning their logos, websites, crafting digital content, and solidifying my path as a graphic designer.
My brand logo features the California Golden Poppy – a nod to my roots and my connection to California’s vibrant, free-spirited lifestyle, which inspires my work.
I’m always pushing myself to grow and explore new creative challenges. When I’m not working, you’ll find me surfing, skateboarding, and playing drums.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road! I grew up in a family with strong cultural expectations; my parents, who are Indian and Burmese, really wanted me to pursue a STEM path. While I respected their wishes, my true passion was always in the arts – music, design, and creativity.
On top of that, I had a speech impediment growing up and was frequently bullied, which made expressing myself even harder. Still, I saw STEM as a practical way to gain independence and leave the Northeast, with my eyes set on California – a place where I could eventually live more freely and creatively.
I gave engineering an honest shot, but the longer I lived in California, the more I craved a lifestyle that aligned with who I am; that is, one that allowed space for surfing, skateboarding, and expressing my creativity through graphic design.
It took time, but I’ve since carved out a path that blends my skills with my passions. It’s been anything but smooth, but every challenge helped clarify what kind of life and career I truly wanted.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in helping small businesses grow through strategic marketing and social media initiatives, with a strong focus on visual storytelling through graphic design. While my main focus has been on design for growth and engagement, my portfolio includes everything from sports campaigns to fashion and beauty ads.
My style is often described as contemporary and clean, with a love for transparent elements, sleek lines, and color choices that give pieces a modern edge while still being playful and eye-catching. A lot of my inspiration comes from the vibrancy of West LA – surf/skate culture, street art, metal music, and the energy of the people around me.
What I’m most proud of is making a major career shift later in life to pursue my passion for design. It wasn’t easy, but taking that leap gave me the chance to build a creative life on my own terms.
In addition to design, music has always been part of who I am. I’ve played bass guitar since childhood and I’m currently studying percussion, with hopes of using that to fuel a solo project in the metal genre. Creativity drives everything I do – whether I’m behind a screen designing or behind a drum kit creating something raw and expressive.
What does success mean to you?
For me, success is about alignment – living a life where my values, passions, and work are in sync. It’s not just about recognition or financial gain, but about having the freedom to be creative, to keep learning, and to contribute something meaningful.
I feel most successful when I’m helping small businesses grow through design and strategy, or when I finish a project that feels true to my vision. Success also means having time and space for the things that inspire me – like the ocean, music, and connecting with my community.
It took me time to get here, especially since I changed careers later in life, but carving out a path that lets me combine creativity, independence, and purpose – that’s success to me.
