Meet San Fernando Valley Yoga Teacher: Amber Voiles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Voiles.

Amber, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began my yoga journey 20 years ago in Austin, Texas with Mehtab Benton. There were about half a dozen of us in a 200-hour Kundalini training being held at his home before he and his wife, Guru Karam, opened multiple Yoga Yoga locations across the area. I went on to study multiple movement therapies such as the Alexander Technique, Laban, Feldenkrais, LeCoq, Skinner Releasing Technique, and then became a Certified Massage Therapist. After moving to Los Angeles I became an Ayurvedic Wellness Counselor and an Advanced Relax & Renew™ Trainer and ultimately found my passion in teaching people Conscious Relaxation from an Ayurvedic perspective. Love to my beloved teachers Mehtab, Guru Karam, Judith Lasater, Jillian Pransky, Annie Carpenter, Clio Manuelian, Sibyl Buck, Aaron Reed, Phoebe Diftler, Jim Hancock, Robert Davidson, Larry Hecht, Monica Groover, Atul Krishna, Eckhart Tolle, Pema Chodron, Paramahansa Yogananda, and BKS Iyengar.

Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t feel life is ever completely “smooth”. Nor would I want it to be. Life is more interesting with a few rough edges. The struggles have been far greater opportunities for transformation than any successes I’ve ever had.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and career?
I imagine quite a bit. I mean I feel incredibly lucky. It’s a difficult thing to measure, though. And usually, those moments of good or bad luck can be traced back to a moment of intention. I think intention is key.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Curiosity perhaps. And a desire to learn.

What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
I love the creative energy in LA. It’s a place people come to create. That inventiveness is inspiring. It also feels like sometimes though you have to know the right people to see a creation through. And what I like least about LA is that it often feels like those people are inaccessible.
