Meet Sammy Ruiz of North East Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sammy Ruiz

Hi Sammy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started drawing at about 2 years old. I thank my mom for this. We would sit and draw dinosaurs from what she would tell me. My mom was highly creative and passed it on to me. As I got older, I kept drawing and eventually got into selling my drawings which I still do to this day.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To say that the road has been bumpy would be an understatement. Between not getting accepted into any art shows because my art didn’t fit, or the court cases I was experiencing for years, the loss of my mom, depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, life hit hard. But I never stopped drawing. Drawing was an escape. Drawing my creepy characters became a dimension I could transport myself to when reality got too heavy. Through all the adversity I had experienced, it made me more focused, disciplined and persistent with my art career. I kept my eye on the prize. Failure wasn’t an option. Life and people along the way had tried stopping me but they didn’t know who they were messing with.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an artist from North East Los Angeles. My artwork is inspired by Halloween, Horror Movies, the paranormal and overall weird things. I created these characters called Halloween Homies. Halloween Homies are original characters and slasher characters from movies such as Ghostface, Michael Myers and Candyman that are dressed like 90’s styled cholos. I really feel like these characters really set me apart from other artists. I grew up in North East LA seeing family members and friends wearing Pendletons and Ben Davis pants and they all liked scary movies too. I feel like the two worlds go together very well.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Being persistent, undeniable, confident, mentally strong and courageous are all key characteristics you need to have in anything you’re doing in life. What it comes down to is, how bad do you want it? And I want it bad.
