Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Phelps.
Hi Sam, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Southern Kentucky, just outside of Appalachia. I grew up on Bluegrass, Folk, Country, Southern Rock. All the music of that area. I moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, for work in my early 20s, and that’s where I started playing in bar bands. After a few years there, all my music friends decided it was time to get married, and our band crumbled. I wasn’t done, so I headed for Austin, Texas. Made a friend there kind of immediately who wanted to move to New York and asked if I wanted to come. I said yes, very spur of the moment, and I’ve been here ever since.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road. I didn’t go to college and have no degree, so I’d always end up working long hours most days of the week. Not giving me much time or energy to focus on music.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an Americana artist who kind of pulls from all the music he grew up on. I’m truly the most proud of just finally pulling it together and writing some songs. I have notebook full now I’m ready to record. I don’t know if it fully “sets me apart,” but I’m very open and honest in my songwriting, for better or for worse.
What’s next?
My plans are to just keep at it. Keep recording my songs and working on building with my musical community.
