Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Partridge.
Hi Sam, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Emma and I moved to Los Angeles from Richmond, Virginia about a year ago. We were both involved in the local music scene since we were young, and that’s actually how we met; we grew from being bandmates to partners. Emma is an insanely talented guitarist, songwriter, producer, and singer – the type of person who always needs a dedicated drummer in their corner, so we’re a great fit!
A musician friend of ours moved to LA and suggested we do the same. We took over a year to consider moving and finally decided to pull the trigger. We had no jobs lined up in LA and only knew a handful of people here, but we signed a lease with two other friends, loaded all of our belongings and our two pets into a moving truck, and made the cross-country trek last spring.
While job hunting during our early days in LA, Emma spoke with Serge about coming on board at Music Lab Northridge as a guitar instructor. Serge also needed a drum instructor, so we both began teaching at the new Music Lab location. We became good friends with Serge, and he mentioned wanting to transition the location into new ownership. This was a huge decision for us, as we were still newcomers to this great city. We decided that this would be a great opportunity for us, as we are so passionate about music education, and it would be a great chance to plant real roots in the valley.
Music Lab has been a real blessing for us. Watching our students come through our door and grow as both musicians and as people has given me a sense of purpose I haven’t felt before. I know we are making a positive impact on the community by challenging students and helping them discover their passion. I’ve even had the privilege of watching several of my own students go on to form their own bands, write their own music, and play shows. We are just starting out, so I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the Music Lab Northridge family!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest challenge has been work/life balance (still working on that one). I’m working different jobs while Music Lab continues to grow, so I find myself with limited time outside of working. Emma has to tell me to take a break sometimes or to not talk shop when we’re trying to enjoy other things. I love working with my partner, but it definitely requires setting some boundaries to make sure it doesn’t consume all of our time together! Emma isn’t new to management, but I definitely am. I’ve been learning on the job how to interview people, manage instructors’ schedules, and be inspiring to our team.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Music Lab Northridge?

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I know it can be difficult finding trustworthy music lessons. Some students have come to us after unsatisfactory experiences with other music schools or private instructors. You can help us out by spreading the word and letting your friends and family know we exist, and that we accept all ages, levels, and instruments.
