Meet Sam Mehirdel of New York Chicken& Gyro INC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Mehirdel

Hi Sam, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Our journey with New York Chicken & Gyro began with a simple yet powerful vision: bringing authentic, high-quality halal food to the West Coast. Growing up, we saw how limited the fresh, halal options were in California compared to places like New York, where street food culture thrives. We wanted to change that by offering flavorful, high-quality dishes that people could trust and love.

The idea took shape when we realized there was a growing demand for quick, delicious, and halal-certified meals that didn’t compromise on quality. With that in mind, we launched our first location, bringing our signature gyros, rice platters, sandwiches, wings, and house-made sauces to the community. Our goal was simple—serve incredible food that makes people feel like family, which is why our motto is ‘Where food makes us family.’

Through dedication, attention to quality, and a commitment to customer satisfaction, we’ve grown our brand while maintaining the authenticity of our flavors. We’ve expanded to new locations, including our recent venture into North Hollywood, Venice and Downtown LA. Our journey hasn’t been without its challenges, but our love for food and community keeps us pushing forward. We’re excited for what’s ahead and grateful to our loyal customers who have been part of this journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been anything but smooth, but every challenge has shaped us into the business we are today. When we started New York Chicken & Gyro, we invested everything we had—our savings, our time, and even took on personal credit card debt to bring our vision to life. It was a huge risk, but we believed in what we were building.

One of the biggest challenges we faced was the coronavirus pandemic. Like many restaurant owners, we were hit hard when in-person dining came to a halt. It was a make-or-break moment for us. Instead of letting it slow us down, we pivoted quickly—shifting our focus to online delivery and takeout. We optimized our menu, strengthened our partnerships with third-party delivery services, and streamlined our operations. That transition turned out to be a game-changer. Sales started booming, and we gained a loyal customer base that allowed us to expand and open new locations.

Through all the struggles—financial strain, adapting to a changing industry, and navigating uncertain times—we never lost sight of our goal: providing high-quality, flavorful halal food that people love. Every challenge taught us resilience, and today, we’re proud of how far we’ve come.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
New York Chicken & Gyro is more than just a restaurant—it’s a brand built on flavor, authenticity, and community. We specialize in serving high-quality, 100% halal street-style food, inspired by the bold flavors of New York. Our menu features mouthwatering gyros, rice platters, sandwiches, wings, and our signature sauces that take everything to the next level.

What truly sets us apart is our commitment to freshness and quality. We don’t cut corners—our ingredients are always fresh, our recipes are made in-house, and every bite is packed with flavor. But beyond the food, it’s our service and connection with our customers that make the difference. Our motto, ‘Where food makes us family,’ isn’t just a slogan—it’s how we operate. We create an experience where everyone who walks through our doors feels welcomed and leaves satisfied.

Brand-wise, we are most proud of our ability to grow while staying true to our roots. We started as a single location, and through hard work and a loyal customer base, we’ve expanded while maintaining the same quality and passion that started it all. We also take pride in adapting to modern food trends—whether it’s expanding our delivery options, integrating with digital platforms, or opening in new locations like Venice, North Hollwyood, and Downtown.

For anyone who hasn’t tried us yet, we want them to know they’re in for an unforgettable meal. Whether you’re craving a classic gyro, a perfectly seasoned rice platter, or crispy wings dipped in our famous sauces, we’ve got something for everyone. We’re here to serve, and we can’t wait to welcome more people into the NY Chicken & Gyro family.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories revolves around food and family. I remember gathering around the table with my loved ones, sharing meals that were made with care and love. There was something special about the way food brought us together—it wasn’t just about eating, but about creating memories, telling stories, and feeling a sense of belonging.

Growing up, I was always fascinated by the flavors and traditions that went into our meals. Watching family members cook, experimenting with spices, and seeing the joy that a good meal could bring to people left a lasting impression on me. Those moments inspired my passion for food and hospitality, and in many ways, they shaped the foundation of New York Chicken & Gyro.
