Meet Safia Pulliam of Lipstick Mixtapes in Koreatown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Safia Pulliam.

Safia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Lipstick Mixtapes is whatever I’m feeling at the moment to be honest, but has always been beauty centered. At one point in time it was all about makeup & hair for models and talent on photoshoots, campaigns, different media outlets, etc. However, since I’ve lived in LA it’s transitioned into doing that same thing but with nails now. Nails have been a challenging and fun creative outlet for me. Doing artwork I never imagined I could or would ever do has been very rewarding and it’s given me a sense of seeing myself as an artist. I’ve always loved art so doing nails has expanded my creativity for color, shapes and detail. It’s great to have people enjoy and love the work I’ve created because just like most artists I’m sensitive about my shit lol but I always do what I consider to be my bes workt. I’ve been in the beauty industry for 20 years now so I’m thankful to have been around for so long and yet coming up with innovative ways to express myself. I’m looking to retire from this soon and move on to something new. I love a stimulating and fun challenge so whatever it is I welcome it wholeheartedly!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh no, is it ever a smooth road?! Challenges have been situations like not having a car and having to catch the bus to jobs, talent not showing up, not being paid fairly, not getting images from photographers, other artists backstabbing me, helping other artists and they not return the favor, realizing some clients aren’t a good fit for me. Not being paid, salon owners disrespecting and/ or lying about situations. Celeb clients treating me like crap it’s nuts! I could go on and on but you know what all these experiences have made me become a better businesswoman and person so overall no losses only lessons!

Please tell us about Lipstick Mixtapes.
My company is Lipstick Mixtapes, a Beauty Agency. Makeup, Hair, Nails, Creative Direction. Right now, I’m best known for my work as a Nail Artist. I’m most proud of how I’ve been able to seamlessly and successfully transition into doing new things. Staying open to change has helped me grow.

What sets me apart is my ability to show up! If I say, I’m going to do something, I do it! I’ve come to realize that’s not a character trait that many people have so I use it to my advantage. I’m a woman of my word.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be taking baths and playing in the tub. I’m a serial bath taker. It’s one of my favorite places.
