Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Porsche.
Sabrina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in the Bay Area. I went to cosmetology school while I was in high school and I was able to complete it when I graduated. I worked in a few salons over the next few years after high school and realized the salon life wasn’t for me so I decided to get a corporate job. I went on to work at Cisco Systems for seven years. I went from being a receptionist to an Administrative assistant and I knew that wasn’t what I wanted to do either so I convinced my boss to lay me off.
One of my best friends who lived in Los Angeles was able to convince me to move to LA and we started an online clothing store together. The clothing store only last about a year and we didn’t really make much money so I went on to get another corporate job. I worked about three different jobs in which all were temporary until I found a job at an office that sold dental tools. Me and the only other new hire became very close! It turned out he was a model and asked me to style his hair for a photoshoot (I was doing hair as a side hustle to make extra money.) At that shoot, I met an amazing photographer who was impressed by my work and asked me to style hair for an upcoming shoot she had.
Once that shoot day came she had a wardrobe stylist there who was interested in my work and asked me to work with him on more upcoming shoots he had. From there he introduced me to a woman who would soon change my life. That woman became my mentor and gave me my first celebrity hairstyling gig. She didn’t really know me at the time but she told me she prayed for someone to come into her life that she trusted and I popped up! From there she introduced me to Beyonce’s Hairstylist who I clicked very well with and she was able to have me as a backup stylist and now I am one of Beyonce’s Hairstylists! And now that people are able to see my work I have gotten lots of gigs through word of mouth and recommendations. As of today, I have worked with some of the top celebrities in the industry in just three short years!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was tough at the beginning trying to figure out what I wanted to do after moving to LA and having had a failed business. There were times I couldn’t make my rent and I had to ask for help. Times where I couldn’t even afford toilet paper or water. It was so scary. As a freelancer, you never know what’s going to happen. Money is not always guaranteed
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
My company is pretty much myself. I am a freelance hairstylist who specializes in natural hairstyles and textures hair care.
I’m most proud of the fact that I was able to be my own boss and not have to work for someone else. I never thought I had it in me to do what I’m doing now.
What sets me apart from others I think is the energy I give off. I think it’s so important that you stay positive and have a good and professional attitude at all times and not to get too comfortable around clients. My personality (I feel) and my skills have gotten me this far so I think I’m doing something right!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My future plan is to start a company in which I’m already doing. With a product line and wig care.
