Meet Sabrina Lentini

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Lentini.

Sabrina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Music has been my whole life. My first time performing on stage was when I was five years old, and it’s been my passion ever since. I started songwriting at around nine years old and playing guitar at around twelve, and music quickly became the way I expressed myself, my emotions, and it’s now my favorite way to connect with others. In the last 17 years, I’ve been blessed with amazing opportunities because of music. I have so many amazing memories from performing throughout the years, starting with elementary school talent shows, musicals at the theater, singing at the O.C. Fair almost every year since I was five, and then playing with a full band during my pre-teen and early teen years, creating friendships with my bandmates and playing shows at legendary venues like Whiskey a Go Go at 10-years-old. Every experience has been a stepping stone towards today. When I turned 13, I was on a TV show on the Hub Network called Majors & Minors, which was a 16-episode season featuring a cast of twelve young artists, being mentored by top songwriters, recording artists, and musicians, and by the finale, we all had our own first single released with RCA. Majors & Minors played a major role in helping me grow as an artist and a writer. I fell in love with playing guitar even more, and from then on, I began playing more and more acoustic shows as a solo artist as I started to find my voice as a singer/songwriter.

During my sophomore year of high school, I auditioned for Season 13 of American Idol, and I received a Golden Ticket! I was the youngest contestant to make it to the Top 48 during Hollywood Week, and it was a really exciting time to get to say I was on the show that I grew up watching with my family. I feel so lucky that I’ve been able to turn my love for music into a career, where I get to travel and perform and connect with people at my shows and get to co-write with other amazing songwriters who inspire me. I currently split my time between California and Nashville, TN, performing and songwriting. Unfortunately due to Covid-19, venues I normally perform at are closed, so I’m currently unable to play shows, but I’ve been trying to make the most of this time back at home by doing livestreams on social media, songwriting, and for the first time, producing one of my own releases, my new single “Porch Light”. I cannot wait until I’m able to perform again.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Music is what I turn to when things are hard. It’s always been there for me during times of heartbreak and loss. As far as career struggles, I would say that one of the biggest is trying to get my music heard. With every show, I meet more people and get to share my songs with them, which means the world to me. With social media being so important these days, however, trying to build my online presence and reach a larger audience is a journey full of ups and downs. Social media is a wonderful way to connect with my listeners, and I’m so thankful for it. Unfortunately, I think it has also become a subconscious form of validation for a lot of us, whether we mean it to or not. At the end of the day, though, I make sure to stay true to myself and keep the focus on what I love most, which is the music. If I stay true to myself and continue with hard work, I believe the rest will follow. My songs are my stories; they are true to me and my life, and all I want to do is share them and hopefully bring happiness to others.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I’m a California girl with a country heart. My favorite part about songwriting is the story being told, and that’s why I love country music and the way I feel when listening to it, singing it, and writing it. My songs are inspired by everything around me. Some of the songs that I’m most proud of are my most vulnerable. One of my most special songs is “Angels in Snakeskin”, which is inspired by a pair of red snakeskin cowboy boots that belonged to my grandma, then to mama, and now belong to me. Although this story is specific to me, I know there are other people who have a similar one, like a wedding dress or a baseball glove passed down through generations. Music’s greatest power is bringing people together, and I really love to embrace that.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
It’s really hard for me to choose just one favorite childhood memory because I cherish all of the moments I remember. My grandparents were a huge part of my life. My parents and I used to live directly across the street from them, so we would visit them everyday. My grandma and grandpa are no longer with us, and my family experienced a lot of loss in a short amount of time just before I was a teenager, so the memories that I have from when those loved ones were still here are all my favorite. My childhood was filled with music. I remember dancing around and singing to the jukebox in my grandparents’ living room and singing karaoke at home and putting on shows for my family. Just like baking cookies with Grandma or gardening with Grandpa, music was an everyday activity for us. One of my favorite childhood memories is actually a movie: The Wizard of Oz. I watched it at my house, at my grandparents’ house, in the car, everywhere. I would pretend and wish I was Dorothy. I remember blowing bubbles in the backyard with my grandma and pretending that Glinda was coming to visit us. Those memories are a big part of who I am and inspired my song “Dorothy Gale”.
