Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Sheehy.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ryan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started my career in NYC in 2012 not really knowing what to do. I lucked my way onto a set for a Nickelodeon show where I met my first mentor. He was a DP. I was sent on a run to get wrap beers and the DP was ecstatic that I got his favorite. From there, he took me under his wing where I got a taste of small and large productions. I specifically took notice to my mentor’s ability to work on union TV shows and features as a DP and then as a commercial and documentary producer with his production company. That is when I realized you can be both an artist and a business person.
Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all. And I don’t think there’s an end to it. New challenges will always present themselves as you move up in your career. As I’ve grown in the film industry I’ve been broke, discouraged, and uninspired. I’ve also found pockets of comfort along the way. Comfort does sound appealing but you can’t let it get the best of you. Getting comfortable can make you become stagnant and unfortunately, if you stop growing and evolving with the technology or even the political and social climate, you’ll fall behind. You have to continue taking risks to progress your art to remain attractive to future clients. I’ve definitely taken financial risks along the way to produce my own artistic content during times when business is slow. These pursuits are both for art and to always continue challenging myself.
Please tell us about Sheehy TV.
My company is called Sheehy TV. I am both a producer and director of content. Since starting the company, we’ve progressed very fast in the music video world. Within the first year, Sheehy TV produced content for Atlantic Records, RCA Records, Fueled by Ramen, Sony, 300 Entertainment, Harpers Bazaar, and produced a film in partnership with Planned Parenthood. Since then, we’ve made more music and commercial clients as well as produced award-winning short films and an Anthology horror series with Fatale Collective.
What do you do differently in business?
I think business is a tricky thing to do differently then others. There are clear strategies to be more successful and as far as creativity everyone strives for making something brand new. For me, I’ve learned just to be nice to everybody and collaborate as much as possible. Everyone thinks differently and if you can make friends with everyone on your team you’ll have a broader range of ideas from a group of people who can trust each other.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
LA is a great place to start a business in the entertainment industry. There are so many opportunities to network and it’s the best place to find like minded creatives that share the same passions that you do. If you’ve got big dreams, this is the place to chase them.
