Meet Ryan Kevin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Kevin.

Ryan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Picked up my mom’s 35mm camera when I was 16 or so and photographed my friends and I being delinquents throughout 10th and 11th grade at Belmont High School. Fell in love with photography and art during college a few years later after. Had dreams of attending Art Center Pasadena and enrolling in their Photography but could not afford the tuition so I just spent my time in their library reading and taking in their photography art books during my free time. I eventually found a mentor who introduced me to the art scene here in Los Angeles and then began shooting my own work. Made some friends who created work that I gravitated towards and started shooting work that meant something to me.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
To be honest, I don’t think I”ll ever be out of the trenches, but that’s the way it is everywhere isn’t it? Constant self-doubt, questioning of self-worth, asking if any of this will ever amount to anything, all of these anxious thoughts weigh on my mind every single day since I’ve been on this planet. I’ve experienced the commercial and fine art sides of the industry and really, at the end of the day, I’d much rather create things for myself.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
As of now, I’ve had my editorial work published in a few magazines, art galleries, and shows. I’m known for my experimental editorial work alongside my analog circuit bent glitch videos.

I’m truly excited that I get to create imagery that allows me to explore my own philosophy of pushing the culture and experimenting with different mediums.

We’re standing on the shoulders of the previous masters/artists before us and I want to continue the conversation.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I’d tell myself to experiment and trust my vision more. Maybe be more honest in my work, or take a step back and see the bigger picture sometimes. The macro is just as important as the micro.

To be honest, I’m not content with where I’m at right now, but I have no regrets of everything that happened to get me here.
