Meet Ruth Frechman of On the Weigh in Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruth Frechman.

Ruth, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was young, I didn’t know that I wanted to be a registered dietitian. But in third grade I knew that I didn’t want to get osteoporosis. My grandmother from England never drank milk and didn’t consume much cheese and had shrunk in height from osteoporosis. So all of my life I have been a big fan of dairy and have been a believer that calcium is important for strong bones. My height is exactly the same as I was at 12 years old.

Life can be complicated. Why create unnecessary problems? Living a healthy lifestyle by eating healthfully and exercising regularly prevents health problems. I combined my interest in health with helping people and became a registered dietitian with a private practice in Burbank.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I started my private practice 30 years ago, I was excited. With my name listed in the phone book yellow pages, I thought the phone would be ringing off the hook. There were several reasons why I could barely pay the bills. To my surprise health isn’t a priority to many people. They would rather take a pill than change their habits.

Another reason is that there has always been and always will be an endless supply of nutrition misinformation. It’s more fun to follow the latest fad instead of moderation.

With so many opinions, it’s always a struggle to get people to trust reliable advice. And finally, people don’t want to pay for nutrition information. They felt that insurance should pay.

This has been a problem for many, many years. And it was frustrating to see other professions getting insurance reimbursement for nutrition services, when we are the nutrition experts.

Things are slightly better these days but still have a long way to go to improve.

On the Weigh – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
