Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby De Fresno.
Ruby, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Sometimes the path to success isn’t a straight line. I grew up in the California Central Valley, the child of Mexican immigrants. We only spoke Spanish at home. I spent the 1990s involved in the Fresno bar and club scene. Then I moved to Los Angeles in 2001, worked in information technology, went to business school, and founded a successful skincare business. However, I always wanted to get back into the bar and entertainment business. I wanted to recapture that sense of fun and community. I also needed another entrepreneurial challenge. So, when the opportunity arose to buy the Faultline, my business partner and I jumped at it. This place has a great history going back to when Judy Garland’s husband Sid Luft owned it in the 1950s. Then it was called the Red Rouge.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have been detours and unforeseen obstacles. Also, being a woman in a business typically dominated by men has posed some challenges. However, the Faultline has a great staff. They are the heart and soul of the place. I have developed wonderful relationships with key talent and promoters. Our goal is to provide innovative programming in a historical setting while supporting the community. Our patrons are the most important thing.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Faultline Bar – what should we know?
The Faultline has a long and significant history in Silver Lake and Los Angeles. It’s notable for its indoor lounge and large outdoor patio. We’ve been focused on making changes to enhance the customer experience and expand our programming to include live performances, music, comedy, spoken word, etc. The next year should see some key developments in that regard. I think what makes us different is the focus on the customer, their experience, and creating a sense of community.
