Meet Ruby Anton of Mid City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby Anton

Hi Ruby, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’d like to thank Marina and the Diamonds for making me a fan of pop music and performance at the bright young age of 15—her show literally blew my mind. I had no idea the music industry was something I could be a part of until a few years later, and I’ve been working in it ever since.

I decided to study Music Business at Columbia College Chicago and started working with Sofar Sounds, hosting shows in people’s apartments across the city. From there, I attended what felt like hundreds of shows and worked in venues doing everything from hospitality to box office to merch sales for touring artists—pretty much saying yes to every opportunity that came my way.

After graduating, I landed a role as a production and wardrobe assistant on Lizzo’s Cuz I Love You Too Tour. I traveled on the bus with the dancers, one of whom connected me to the brilliant songwriter Tayla Parx (Ariana Grande, Panic! at the Disco, Janelle Monáe). We worked together throughout the pandemic, and I got to witness firsthand the genius of the pop songwriting world in LA, and globally.

That experience eventually led me to State of the Art, where I now work in management—and I absolutely love it. Our current roster that I’m across includes LP, Debbii Dawson, Mette, Em Beihold, Livingston, and garbagebarbie, all of whom are truly exceptional artists pushing culture forward.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There are always struggles to overcome, and I take things one day at a time, addressing each obstacle as it comes. I view every job and experience as a small piece of a larger puzzle. With every challenge, I’ve learned something valuable about myself—how I like to communicate, how to extend grace to myself and others, and, most importantly, how to be patient and balance my work and home life. I’ve also discovered what I don’t enjoy, which has helped shape the way I make decisions.

One of the biggest challenges in this industry is navigating the many personalities—not just those of the artists, but also the teams that support them. Over time, I’ve learned to keep good people in my corner, surrounding myself with those who inspire me, uplift me, and push me to do my best. At the end of the day, we’re all just trying to create great music and meaningful art.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Manager at a music management company based in LA. I work across all genre’s, primarily left of center pop and indie pop. Some of the incredible artists that I work with are Debbii Dawson, Mette, LP, garbagebarbie, Em Beihold, Livingston… I really try to help our artists make the best music they can possibly make and get to the core of what they want to share with the world. We’re a true artist development team that nurtures authenticity and helps artists impact the culture that they want to impact.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I feel like my most of my career has just been luck. That’s my imposter syndrome talking. There’s hard work of course, but sometimes you just get lucky and hope to be surrounded by talented, genuine people that share in the vision.
