Meet Roya Adjory of Nori’s Eco Salon in Encino

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roya Adjory.

Roya, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Nori’s Eco salon is a family owned and operated small business and has been serving the community for the last 27 years. About 14 years ago, my sister’s constant allergic reactions upon entering the salon and during her work hours instigated a search for answers that would help her cope. I began looking at our products and anything else that was used at our salon. My findings were shocking and I could not believe I have never known these facts about my own industry. Not only the industry was not regulated by any governing body but also majority of chemicals used in these products have not been tested for safety. The laws are 70 years old and no longer protect the public from exposure to chemicals known to the state of California to be carcinogenic and mutagenic and basically harmful. As a result a whole slew of dangerous chemicals have found themselves in our bodies. I knew my sister was not the only one with such a reactions to chemicals in the personal care products and to my surprise, I began to encounter countless others with all sorts of reactions that prevented them from coloring their hair or even going to hair salons or suffered from many sensitivities. I also found out that The Beauty professionals are at risk of many deadly diseases due to their exposure to beauty and nail salon products. I kept hoping thinking someone should start a Green hair salon and one morning I realized that person was me. One by one, our products were replaced with a healthier choices and since we needed to relocate, that gave us the opportunity to also look for alternative building materials like Paper Stone which is used for our counter tops, Denim Jeans insulation, Natural Marmolium flooring with any formaldehyde, LED lighting and so on and so forth. Lot of these materials were costly at the time but I was determined to create a Green space with non-toxic hair and skin products.

Twelve years later, we are the first salon to receive a certification from Los Angeles Green Business Program and a Climate Leader award from Cool California a division of California Air resources. It has been a challenging path but we have made our mark in the movement towards a healthier practice and products for us and our environment. We educate our clients by our actions and information that will help them make healthier choices and creating a more lasting and sustainable beauty . we also like to encourage and inspire other small businesses in doing their share in creating a world that works for everyone. Our salon continues to grow and attract like-minded individuals and health conscious consumers who are aware of accumulative effects of certain chemicals in personal care products and make choices to avoid them.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There is a big reluctance to change whether it is your hair color or hair stylists. people find comfort in knowing the same stylist forever even though they might not be open to switching to healthier products. As the public becomes more aware, there is much more openness among stylists to look at healthier options and find products that works for them. The natural food and product industry is one of the largest segment of the economy and it is obvious the change is on its way.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the nori’s eco salon story. Tell us more about the business.
We are the first salon to be Green in the whole California and we have set a tone for what is happening now in this industry. As a result of growing consumer awareness on the impact of these chemicals in our foods, water and bodies, the demand is on the rise for healthier hair products and services. We offer a hair coloring line from Denmark called NATULIQUE that I believe is the only hair color that has received the prestigious Eco Cert certification and also USDA certification.

Having products like Natulique that has been well researched is what sets us also apart from other salons. Our space is spotless and completely free from any dangerous chemicals. We invite everyone to experience the difference in a Green space.
