Meet Roxy Morrison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roxy Morrison.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Roxy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m an actor based in Los Angeles, amongst other things. I started performing when I was about 10, my first role was Peter Pan in a school play with one line hehe. I’ve been training and acting ever since. I’ve trained at Piven Theater, the Peter Frisch Studio, San Francisco State University, UCLA, and Ruskin Theater. Training has pretty much been my life! I love being in class, I love connecting to a community of actors and directors for the sake of the craft and I LOVE being on stage. Film came into my life around 19 when I realized that the Southern California entertainment realm truly revolves around the film industry. I started acting in film as kind of a means-to-an-end and ended up falling in love with (the entirely different) craft of film-making. So here I am, continuing to train, exploring myself as an artist and creating with my community.

Has it been a smooth road?
Whew, no way has it been smooth! When you choose the life and path of an artist, you sign up for a life of uncertainty, it’s a given. But dang is it exciting and rewarding, there is absolutely no other path I’d rather be. I’ve been faced with more rejection than I can even quantify, I’ve faced deception from people I’ve trusted the most, I’ve experienced being dead broke and I’ve faced a complete lack of faith in myself and the industry more times than I’d like to admit. The lows as an actor or artist are immense and dark. But quitting is just not in the cards for me. Never has been and never will be. This is my life and in retrospect, the lows are perfect and so necessary, the struggles keep me honest with myself and ultimately they continue to refocus me on what’s most important; the craft and the work.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Get ready for the poster child of the slash-generation: I’m an actor first and foremost. But I am also a producer/birth doula/writer and filmmaker. I just co-wrote my first long-form short, I’m in the process of producing a short and series and I’m in the early stages of producing a play and penning my first screenplay. As an actor in Los Angeles, you realize yes… in all realness, we are a dime a dozen. There is no shortage of talent, charisma, and passion in this city so you better be constantly working on your own material. That is what I’m most proud of honestly; the fact that I came to the conclusion that I will give myself my dream role one day.

I’m also very proud to have my foot in the wellness and healing sphere of the human experience. I started my Birth Doula journey at the beginning of this year! A Birth Doula, if you’re not familiar, is a woman (or man) that provides physical and emotional support to a laboring woman during childbirth. Doulas are advocates for women, especially within the medical, industrial complex, and are a sort of connective tissue between the birthing mother and the medical team. I am deeply inspired by this work in terms of advocacy but more importantly, the human connection that evolves through the miracle of childbirth adds to my creative palate as an artist in so many ways. It truly fills me with an overwhelming depth and connection to the spiritual world. It is a path I plan on traveling for the rest of my life.

All in all, there is no retirement plan; there is no 401k, there is just the work and human connection. And thats what I’m here for.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see women and POC gaining more and more power. I see story-telling to be the most diverse and out of the box it’s ever been. I see hyper-realism to take main stage in episodic form.
