Meet Ronjini Joshua of The Silver Telegram in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ronjini Joshua.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started out as an intern in PR, never thinking or even wanting my own agency. I was at a tech PR agency, even though my heart was set on entertainment PR. However, it just was a better job for me to do technology at a time when it wasn’t really the sexiest PR job. I worked very hard and was able to finally get PR to click for me and when it did, I discovered that I was really good at media relations and results-driven PR. I worked at small and large agencies and even worked in-house for a couple of years as well, always focused on tech PR. In 2011, I started working for a pretty large and well-known agency and realized that there were a lot of small companies arising that didn’t have the kind of money a big agency requires, so I thought of freelancing and working with those startup companies.

I started by being a freelancer, but through word of mouth continued to get referrals, so I enlisted some help.

Before I knew it, 1 became 2, which became three and more. Six years later, I have gone through many different business scenarios both good and evil. Running a business is a lot more complicated and tedious than glamorous, but it can also be extremely rewarding as well.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, there was a huge learning curve. I was trained as a PR professional, not as a business person. Everything I know about business, I’ve learned along the way. Most of it is about how a business is set up and focusing on doing the thing that I am best at, rather than trying to take on everything myself. That’s one thing that I think entrepreneurs end up doing to themselves because there is a certain way they want things. Doing too much yourself really ruins the specialness of the value you have to offer. You can’t specialize in everything.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Silver Telegram – what should we know?
The Silver Telegram is a PR agency that works with lean companies, startups and crowdfunding. I am very proud of the fact that we create unique campaigns for every client. There are no templates when it comes to creative ideas. We really listen to the unique proposition of the client and focus on building a unique brand message for their PR campaigns. Even incorporating ideas and tactics that aren’t traditionally PR, but will bring in the desired ROI.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I did most of it myself, because I thought that’s what people do. I have had some folks that were on my side that referred me to others and bounced ideas with, mostly my family.
