Robin Berning

Robin has a diverse set of creative skills. Inspired by nature, raw materials, and vintage pasts while incorporating contemporary, modern aspects. Robin grew up in a small midwestern town in Iowa, where her love for art began by being inspired by the beautiful rolling hills and flowing meadows. Robin has appreciated art since a very young age. After high school, she continued her education in interior design, architectural drafting and construction, and real estate. Robin possesses a varied range of creative abilities that draw inspiration from nature, unrefined elements, bygone eras and blend them with contemporary and modern elements. Robin now lives in Arizona, surrounded by the inspiration of the vast beauty of the desert & mountains. During Covid, Robin rediscovered the art of macrame’ from the 70’s. Robin’s passion lies in transforming the vintage art form of macrame by incorporating a variety of mediums. Through Robin’s expertise, she brings to life exceptional and unparalleled rope art that elevates the ambiance of both residential and commercial spaces.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are always challenges. I look at them as opportunities for growth. Finding high-quality, unique, and ethically sourced materials for large-scale macrame projects can be difficult. It can also be expensive, affecting the artist’s and clients’ budgets. Working on large pieces can also be physically demanding and extremely time-consuming.

The field of macrame has also become increasingly popular in recent years. Standing out in a competitive market can be a significant challenge.

Artists need to develop strong branding and marketing strategies to reach target audiences. Which can also be expensive.

Transportation/shipping options and cost is a challenge in it’s self and a real struggle.

Personal and artistic growth is important and challenging to evolve my style and skills while maintaining a recognizable artistic identity.

Despite the challenges, I find fulfillment and success in the world of macro macrame by persevering, continually honing my craft, and finding my unique voice within the medium. Patience, dedication, and a strong artistic vision help me overcome these obstacles and create inspiring works of art.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a self-taught Macramé artist, I have discovered the incredible control and versatility that fiber materials offer, enabling myself to explore endless possibilities. At the heart of my artistic vision is a dedication to elevating classic designs by skillfully integrating new mediums and embracing exaggerated dimensions. By striking a harmonious balance between contemporary aesthetics and timeless appeal, I strive to create art that resonates with both the present and the past. My approach to Macramé involves a combination of premeditation and trial-and-error. Over time, I have developed a refined sense of precision and accuracy, recognizing that each of my creations is unique and that my artistic process defies strict methodology. Working primarily on a commission basis, I engage in collaborative brainstorming sessions with clients to understand their vision, translating their ideas into sketches that effectively communicate the concept. Once the concept is approved, I meticulously source my ropes from American suppliers, ensuring their quality and suitability for the project. Carefully sizing, cutting, and mounting the ropes, I then embark on the intricate knotting process, bringing the vision to life. The initial phase of starting a project and immersing myself in the creative process can be the most daunting and also the most therapeutic. It allows myself to channel my energy solely into the art of Macrame. Getting lost in the work resulting in captivating and exceptional creations.

What were you like growing up?
I was & am a total tomboy! I always wanted to be outdoors. I was not into your typical girl things, like dolls and such. I’d rather climb trees and explore the great outdoors. I always had an appreciation for the beauty that already surrounds us. I’ve always loved to create things. I’m as tough as a boy but can clean up as pretty as a girl. I love to always challenge myself. I’ve hiked Half Dome; I cycled across several states. I love to ride my Harley. But I also love to get all dolled up & dressy for a nice dinner out……..I appreciate all things art…….
