Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob Empfield.
Rob, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Prudential Lighting was founded in 1955 (same year as Disneyland) by the Ellis family. Six plus decades later, second and third-generation Ellis’ continue to run daily operations along with our GM, Jon Steele. We are an IBEW union LED lighting manufacturer with an awesome team in a family-like business that has become a major player in commercial interior lighting. Forty years ago there were over a dozen in the city of LA, we are the only survivor, and we are thriving with a focus on architectural detail and optical performance for human-centric lighting.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Obstacles are an opportunity for improvement, right? Actually, commercial interior lighting had little change from the 50’s to early 00’s, from T12 fluorescent to T8 and T5. There has been more change in the last eight years as the entire industry rapidly transitioned to LED. This ‘restart’ to lighting has enabled Prudential Lighting to embrace technology and ask ‘what does LED lighting really want to become?’ This mindset has spearheaded our development of new form factors and optics to improve the quality of light, reduce the amount of fixtures needed (and energy consumed) and reduce overall installation investment.
Prudential Lighting – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
While continuing to evolve core product workhorses like rounds, linear and the incredibly adaptable Snap Series, Prudential is currently at the forefront of revolutionary change. Its proprietary breakthrough, TruBeam™, has recently redefined the concept of industry best, elevating and embracing an entirely new product standard. A transformative, high-efficiency synthesis of superior control and captivating illumination, this advanced technology has reimagined the potential for wall washes, grazes and cove lighting right out of the gate, with infinitely unlimited possibilities ahead.
