Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Criley. Them and their team share their story with us below:
The Palos Verdes Tutoring Company was founded in 2016 by Dilan Mistry and Isaiah Aly. Since then, we’ve been a 100% student-run company dedicated to providing high-quality tutoring services for all students in the South Bay. After Dilan and Isaiah graduated, they wanted to ensure that the company they created could continue to provide its services for future generations of students in need. Every year, a new pair of Palos Verdes High School seniors are chosen by the previous CEOs to run the company. For the 2020-2021 school year, our company is led by co-CEOs Richard Criley and Spencer Levin.
Our entire student staff is hand-picked each year for their academic expertise, tutoring experience, and passion for helping others. Our company attracts some of the brightest minds from Palos Verdes High School. We are incredibly passionate about what we do. Our philosophy is to ensure that each student not only achieves their immediate academic goals but also develops the capability to approach future challenges independently. As students themselves, our tutors can relate in a way no others can to the unique obstacles South Bay elementary, middle, and high school students face.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
COVID-19 definitely brought a host of problems to our company, as all of our tutorings had previously been done in person. It was difficult at first to transition our company to provide contactless tutoring services, but eventually we got the hang of it. The vast majority of our tutoring this year was done online through applications like Zoom or Discord. We had to transfer all our payment methods through Venmo as well, as many of our tutors would previously receive cash as compensation. However, because almost all of our tutoring was done virtually, we were able to scale our tutors’ services to reach even more students around the South Bay.
We’ve been impressed with Palos Verdes Tutoring Co, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We provide the best tutoring service in the South Bay, hands down. From elementary school students learning to write sentences to high school students in their AP Calculus classes, we are able to reach the entire spectrum of K-12 education. Our services are affordable, too, at almost half the cost of other professional tutoring services run by adults. At our price level, our quality is absolutely unmatched and arguably better than what students receive from being tutored by adults.
