Today we’d like to introduce you to Ricardo Herrera.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Well… my passion always has been music since I was very little but only very recently (a couple of years ago) I discovered photography, just by taking photos of places I went and documenting what I did. Then I started taking photos at Concerts with my cell phone looking to snap a cool shot but never did due to the technical difficulties of concert photography and the limitations of a cell phone, so I kind of became obsessed with trying to get a “cool” shot at a concert, so I started learning more about concert photography on my own until I got the opportunity to photograph local bands with a DSLR camera and that’s when everything started. From there, my photography has evolved beyond concerts and I also do all kinds of events, photo shoots, landscape, night photography and occasional experimental photography on my own.
Please tell us about your art.
I’m a photographer obsess with capturing the best moments possible and making memories that will last forever(i hope at least). My approach to photography is not only capturing what I see but trying to create a better version of reality. Our minds are not used to capture or remember still images, our memories are more like videos, that’s why still images create a deeper curiosity and sense of “magic” with most people because it recreates moments that we maybe forgot or that we didn’t remember that way. Plus I think a good photo should transmit more than an image, should create a reaction, either good or bad but if it doesn’t make you feel something, so you failed as a photographer.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I think a real artist is not really seeking “Fame” but is more looking for “recognition” or people that appreciate or admire his/her work. Unfortunately, you can’t really Live out of “recognition” so at some point your work have to be more commercial and make some kind of profit which is the hardest part I think. But I do think if you really have some kind of talent and constantly try to improve and do something unique that can set you apart from the rest, at some point someone will offer you something for your work and you’ll find a way to keep growing.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I’m mostly active on social media and sometimes my work in publishing on Media Websites or Online Magazines specialized on Live Music or Events but for the most part I’m a freelance photographer doing work for hire or doing my own thing but always willing to collaborate or share my work with anybody interested on showing it in one way or another.
