Meet Renee Taylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Renee Taylor.

Renee Taylor

Hi Renee, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been blessed to have two jobs I love that are running side by side right now. I did full-time radio for over 30 years. I now do it part-time. And now I am an artist working full time (sort of). My passion for art has been a lifelong journey. I grew up in a family of artists. I found my own love to create art re-ignited over eight years ago when I was laid off from a job I had done for 30 hrs. I found myself in an art group made up of six women exploring sketching, drawing and painting with watercolor, acrylic paint, mixed media and more. My creative side was once limited to gifts for family and friends, but it has blossomed into an art business. My artwork is a combination of my love of art and my passion to create.

I work with acrylic paint and use a technique called fluid painting to create my abstract art on canvas, wood, tile, glass jewelry and more.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been big and small struggles. It can be hard going from a full-time job to working for yourself and managing your time. I had no idea how to run a business, so I made lots of costly mistakes. I was introduced to SBDC and was able to get the business guidance I needed.

Also, being an Artist can take an emotional toll. When people don’t like your art, it can be a very personal rejection. I did so many shows where no one bought anything or I only sold 1 or 2 things. You want to give up. I talked to a lot of people for advice and started to find the best places for me to sell my art.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create abstract art with acrylic paint. I use a technique called fluid painting. There are many forms of fluid painting and I do mostly the bloom technique. I will pour paint on anything with a flat surface… I decided to expand past just canvas painting and started making what I like to call functional art. This includes Lazy Susan’s, coaster sets, wall hooks. And more. I also make jewelry from my dried leftover paint. It creates very unique one of a kind pieces. I am most proud of creating art that creates a connection with other people. And I believe my visual eye for colors and shapes sets me apart from others that may do the same techniques that I use.
My work and vision is uplifted by my faith.

Any big plans?
I am starting to do more art shows. These allow me to focus more on larger canvas paintings. I am excited to launch and my website soon. I have built an email list and have a number of return clients. I am also interested in teaching this technique to others. This may be a year or two away but you never know it could come together sooner.
