Today we’d like to introduce you to Renée Fox.
Renée, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I could draw as a child, but my painting education began in the traditional way- as a paid apprentice to a highly skilled artist/ muralist in Washington DC. I worked as an artist on her jobs for over 10 years and when I moved to Los Angeles, I began my own decorative painting business. My education was complemented by a BFA program at Otis College of Art and Design. I still make and exhibit my own fine art, which is anywhere from miniature to mural sized, at galleries and museums nationwide and internationally and I have work in both private and museum collections.
Perhaps it is my fine art education that drives me to develop unique, creative solutions for each and every decorative painting project. I work on a variety of jobs- from murals in nurseries, dining rooms or commercial locations, to fine metal gilded ceilings in opulent homes, wood graining, trompe l’oiel or custom wall finishes. I’ve even painted trompe l’ oiel of Indian Rajastan tile inlay on the floors of a custom yacht in Chile!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Mostly, life as an artist has felt charmed. Early on, I was in constant demand for jobs, but as the popularity of faux and residential murals ebbed so did business. My biggest challenge was to reinvent my business by creating work that was modern and current. That has really paid off.
It is also important to mention that the way I market my work has also had to change with the times. I now continue to reach my customers who are increasingly online through social media and home renovation websites.
Please tell us about Fox Decorative Arts.
I specialize in custom project-specific solutions, so projects with me always start with strong communication with my clients and then a design process where I produce drawings and/ or samples.
My skillset includes murals, custom pattern and stencil creation, good trompe l’oiel (French for “fool the eye”, gleaming metallic finishes and fine metal leafing, design and paint of murals for residences and businesses, plaster, glaze, combed, brushed, modern or aged wall finishes, basically anything I can do with paint and brushes! My favorite are murals, especially for children’s rooms 🙂
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Looking back, the only thing I’d change would be to strengthen my marketing and outreach. One can never have too many clients.
