Today we’d like to introduce you to René Romano.
René, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started 20 years ago working for The Associated Press as a freelancer and Major League Soccer as the first ever official stringer, reporter and beat writer for the Los Angeles Galaxy and the League.
I am a Guatemalan journalist, National Columnist, critic and radio personality known for my efforts and 20 plus years experience in sports and entertainment coverage in the United States.
After the AP and MLS, I moved onto LA Opinión, the biggest Hispanic Newspaper in the country, before managing the Editorial Desk at Fox Deportes that was later outsourced to Guatemala City. Ihanded the site over seven years later, to a bunch of talented kids. An extremely sad moment to hand over such an important project to the youth in my native country.
Budget cuts at Fox Sports affected many, and it seemed like the industry as a whole.
That’s when in 2011, I built LAVOXDEPORTIVA, now rebranded as THELAVOX and went off on my own with the full support of all LOS ANGELES MAJOR LEAGUE SPORTS MEDIA departments.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road at all. A challenging one that proved to me that if you fall seven times, you have to get up eight times to keep fighting. People will come and go, Faces are all the same with different names everywhere. It’s about associating yourself with the right people. That’s how respect is earned. Through work, and not pretending to be someone you’re not. It’s about being you, and doing you. That’s what keeps me here after two decades and going strong!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about TheLAVox.com – what should we know?
Founded Rojomanía.com on January 8, 2001 and LA VOX DEPORTIVA.COM in October 2011 to later spearhead THELAVOX.COM [2]. Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mentors are famous poets and writers, as well as Media Relations Managers and colleagues who have inspired me to keep pushing. To mention a few among many, Joseph D’Hippolito, Scott French and Marisabel Muñoz have helped build this career. But God almighty and mother deserve major props as well. To say the
least.
Pushing me to be better and create my own image, my own style and calls that I am known for.
