Today we’d like to introduce you to Renato Babalu Sobral.
Renato, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m retired Brazilian Mixed Martial Arts fighter and former Strike Force Light Heavyweight World Champion. I start pretty earlier when I was 10 yrs. old. I fall in love with Martial Arts and I tried different styles till I turned 18 yrs old on that time I had to enjoy army on airborne. After all, back to the mats, then start my journey. I got recognized by my country as the best Wrestling Competitor on that time. What great memories I do have.
I also previously fought in the Ultimate Fight Championship. Where I posted 6-4 records. Also compete in many organizations around the world. As Bellator, Rings, Jungle Fight, Cage Rage, Affliction and One FC. After traveling so much to compete I decide to move to America in 2006 to improve my skills. On that time, I already had met my wife and we had our first daughter Maria Fernanda. I am Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr and Master in Muay Thai (kickboxing) and I develop beside job as instructor. So, I founded in 2010 my own gym Babalu’s Iron Gym that is located at Cerritos, Long Beach area where I teach till the days of today.
Has it been a smooth road?
Wasn’t that easy at all. But I learned to face adversity inside the mats and take the experience that I have in martial arts to overcome my challenges in life.

My gym is located at Cerritos California surrounding Long Beach area. I am specialized in Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai and self-defense. More than that, I am life coach. I am known for the fights that I had done where I could conquer greats results on submission and perseverance. I am very proud of my group of students. It’s very important to me to see how my knowledge can impact on people life. changing lives thru martial arts is incredible pride to me. my experience that family environments that I create inside my gym and the relationship that I have with them.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like the Diversity that exist in Los Angeles. Los Angeles is a city of dreams. Well, I my opinion what is missing to LA be perfect is public transportation.
