Meet Remi Moehring of Verdigo Boulders in Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Remi Moehring.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Remi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We’re part of the Touchstone family of gyms. Our first gym opened in San Francisco in 1995. Verdigo Boulders will be our 12th location, but certainly not our last! We’re under construction right now, but we’re hoping to be open in a matter of days!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our biggest challenge these days is keeping up with the rate the climbing community is growing. Climbing gyms are opening facilities at a staggering pace, and somehow every year there’s demand for more walls in more locations. It’s completely blowing up! It’s a good problem to have, but along with that comes the challenge of educating our community to help preserve our outdoor spaces. We facilitate outdoor ethics clinics and are heavily involved with organizations who protect outdoor landscapes in various ways, but it will always be a challenge to educate a rapidly expanding community.

Please tell us about Verdigo Boulders.
We specialize in indoor climbing, but each of our locations has unique offerings based on the vibe of the area. We want to reflect the neighborhood we’re in rather than change it, and one of the things that sets us apart is each location’s freedom to adapt to its own community.

One of the biggest perks for our members is the number of facilities they have access to – a membership at any of our gyms gives you access to all locations. So many people in California travel from south to north throughout the year, and the ability to continue climbing on vacations or work trips at no additional cost is a huge plus. When our Pasadena location opens, we’ll have five gyms in the LA area alone. Keep driving north and you’ll hit eight more!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Christmas! We’re not religious, but my grandma always made a huge spectacle of the holiday, and now I’m here to make sure the spectacle gets more lit every year. Even when my family went through hard times financially, our holiday traditions stayed alive and remained special. Grandma’s still kicking, and we still bake cookies together.
