Meet Rebekah Faubion

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebekah Faubion.

Hi Rebekah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Almost all writers tell their first stories as children, and the earliest memory I have of writing down a story and finishing it all the way to the end was when I was nine years old during a particularly hot Texas summer. My best friend and I found an old blue typewriter in her grandma’s junk room that wasn’t junk at all, and in between running wild in the woods and getting a bad case of poison ivy, we wrote a screenplay about a train wreck and a kidnapping.

I never stopped writing after that, though I took a lot of detours along the way. Nine years ago, while I was living in Brooklyn, NY — being a mom to a toddler and out of my comfort zone in a big city I wasn’t so sure about— I started writing with the intent to one day publish a book.

In that time, I’ve been able to hone my craft, I’ve signed with top literary agents for representation, acquired (still secret — because publishing is slow as molasses) book deals, and I started to realize that I had a knowledge base that I could use to help writers in their own pursuit, on their own unique journey with storytelling. Unbridled Creative Consulting was born of a keen desire to unlock potential in writers and help them reach their dreams. I use my experience with the publishing industry and my screenwriting training to do that.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh, I love the idea that any road could EVER be smooth! No, no, mine hasn’t been and also, to be perfectly honest, I don’t think I would have wanted it to be. So much of the knowledge I’ve gained that I can share with my clients is a result of the twists on my own path. If I hadn’t had those twists, I might not be here.

I have been represented by three different agents since I started out, and I have learned so much each time I have had to go back out there with a new manuscript and acquire new rep.

I have written so many books that will never see the light of day — and shouldn’t, ha! — but each one made me a better writer, and each time I sit down to create, I have a clearer picture of what I’m sitting down for and why.

Starting a business working with writers also had its own unique challenges — like basic biz stuff that I had to learn how to maneuver, but also getting to the nitty-gritty of what I wanted to offer clients and what I saw as the real need in the market.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My sweet spot in storytelling is coming-of-age with romance – whether that be in the young adult stories I write or the women’s fiction books I’m creating. But I also work with a writing partner (under the pen names Victoria Fulton and Faith McClaren) and we do super commercial rom-coms and horror. We became successful on Wattpad (a storytelling platform) with our book ELLIE IS COOL NOW, which is a great example of our collaboration and a lot of fun to read.

I am multifaceted as a creative and I recognize when a concept it sellable. I bring this into my work with my coaching and editorial clients as well because so much of my job is to push their ideas and help them hone their vision for their stories. Most of them want to be traditionally published, which means they need an agent, and the work we do together is designed to help them stand out in the crowded market.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
In life, what matters most to me is my family. I am married and have a son, and being a mom and wife is one of the most deeply challenging and rewarding things I’ve ever endeavored to do. I love to grow with them and love to pursue my dreams alongside theirs.

But telling stories is a calling. A compulsion. It’s water and air. Every time I sit down to write, I am challenging myself to go deeper, be better than I was yesterday, and that makes me a braver and more fulfilled human being — which definitely makes me a better wife and mom.

Pricing:

  • I also work with clients on coaching, which is $500 a month and is designed to not only help them break their story (whether revising or drafting) but also prepare themselves for going into the market with their work.
