Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Ruland.
Rebecca, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started Sweet Dreams Bakery OC in April of 2020 — right around the beginning of the pandemic. I came home from college in March for Spring Break and shortly after, quarantine happened. Unable to go back to school for the end of my senior year, I was bored out of my mind and honestly really sad about missing out on all of the fun and my graduation. I started to bake — mostly to ease some anxiety but also just because it was a fun hobby I already dabbled in. I made an Instagram to post some of my creations and almost immediately the orders poured in! I really began with macarons (and still make them all the time) but I’ve expanded to cakes, cupcakes, cookies, cake pops, chocolate-covered strawberries and meringues. I am now doing weddings and other events, teaching cake decorating, running Sweet Dreams Bakery out of my home and trying to gain as much knowledge as possible!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As far as starting a new business goes, this bakery has been a pretty smooth road! My biggest struggle has been constantly learning new things. If someone asks me to make something I have never done before there is a 100% chance I’ll try to do it! There’s a lot of trial and error, but I enjoy the process.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sweet Dreams Bakery OC – what should we know?
As the owner of Sweet Dreams Bakery OC, I take pride in using the best quality and most natural ingredients in all of my baked goods. Everything — and I mean everything — is made from scratch. I have 20+ different macaron flavors that I have created myself, along with a variety of cake flavors, buttercreams, cupcakes, cake pops, chocolate strawberries, meringues and cookies. I also offer vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options in a large majority of my products. What sets me apart from other bakeries is that I spend hours upon hours decorating, planning and making sure my customers are getting the custom products of their dreams! If it’s not extremely aesthetic, it’s not ready.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My parents deserve so much credit! They were the best encouragement when I first started out and continue to cheer me on every single day. My mom bakes most of the cakes, cupcakes and cookies while I decorate everything. My dad handles more of the business side — especially going through the rules and regulations that a small business needs to have. My friends have also been more than supportive and order all the time!
