Today we’d like to introduce you to Rayvan Murphy
Hi Rayvan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in North Carolina. I’ve been djing since 2004 and I’ve been producing music since around 2009. I was a resident at the first super club in Charlotte, The Forum. I was the resident there for 3 years before moving to Atlanta where I was a resident Dj at Fever, before moving to Havana Club, Reign, and Vanquish. I started my record label Night Moves in 2015, and I released music from artists who have continued to make a mark in the dance music community. I signed records from Bexxie, DOMii, Diskull, Footwurk, and Daniels Jack. When I got to LA I took fewer gigs to focus on music production, and took on the head A&R position for Brooklyn Fire Records based in NY. My first release under my current Dj moniker (On Deck) reached over 2 million streams and lead to a lot of remix work from artists including Kim Petras, Nicki Minaj, The Crystal Method, John Roberts, Billie Eilish, and more.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Once I got to LA and my first record as On Deck blew up, I began to put together my first tour starting in Miami during Miami Music Week, and then Covid happened. The dates all got canceled and we spent 2 years indoors! Coming out of the pandemic the music industry was slow to start back up and even slower to start paying out artists. On more than one occasion I considered giving up music and trying to go back to school, but at venues slowly started to open I began taking some local dj gigs and it sparked a partnership with another dj named Skemaddox, and his company Above The Clouds.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Today I throw events partnering with Above The Clouds, and I’m the resident dj for Schwartz and Sandy’s. I’m also a resident at The SLS in Beverly Hills. I’m also going to be one of the residents at new Las Vegas venue when it opens in the fall. I’ve relaunched and revamped my label (Night Moves) and I’m focused primarily on music production as well as working on collaborations with skemaddox, Tommie Sunshine, AHIMSA, Dj Red, and revamping an older project with DOMii. I’m really proud of what I am my team have been able to do with no major label support, and the fact that we are consistently finding and breaking new talent from all over the US and Canada.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
My work ethic and how I’m perceived by my peers. I like that my colleagues can depend on me whenever they need something and vice versa. LA can feel very transactional at times but I like to think that the people I work with are like a little family, even if it can be dysfunctional at times. Especially since my actual family is so far away. I love that we can depend on each other and we actually are friends outside of work. Im proud of the collective of artist that we’ve built.
