Raymond, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Our story begins with one man’s need for perfection. In 1987 a prominent Hollywood talent agent, better known as Mr. Marty Baum, walked into my father-in-law’s store, world famous shirt maker Anto Beverly Hills (antoshirt.com). He had concerns about the way his custom shirts fit him. After Anto looked into the matter, he discovered that the gentleman’s shirt was not the issue, the care and press were. To both Mr. Baum and Anto’s surprise, there were no quality cleaners that put customers first, helping people assure their pieces would look the same way forever, as intended. There was a need to be met, and that’s when Custom Laundry and Cleaners was born.
Thirty years later, 2017, Custom Laundry and Cleaners has developed into one of the leading cleaners in the industry that incorporates a multi-prong approach of services in laundry and dry cleaning. From hand pressing your favorite shirt to protecting your most memorable garment, our team provides personal care to each person’s need. Our customized services include everything from pickup and delivery to worldwide shipping. We ensure the preservation of both the planet and the garment through eco-friendly measures. At Custom Laundry and Cleaners we take it upon ourselves to provide each customer with the perfect clothes, spotless household garments, superb bedding, and a carefree day as you walk away with my joke of the day!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No business is easy, there are daily mishaps, economical changes, shifts in people’s individual needs and many responsibilities starting from your clients and including all your employees. But with the responsibility comes great satisfaction in seeing a service you provide change the way some people look, live and function. The struggles of economy are felt as a small business, but the importance is to never stop providing the quality service we started out with, the only potential change allowed is improvement.
Custom Laundry & Cleaners – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We’re a full service laundry and dry clean provider. Our specialty truly lies in hand ironed shirts and linen cleaning. By starting out in a professional bespoke shirt making company, I learned the fine art behind shirting and the fabrics involved. My experience there gave me the knowledge necessary of how to care for each unique garment. The attention to detail that we provide for shirts and garments are unmatchable combined with eco-friendly cleaning methods. We take pride in that. We’re also one of the only cleaners with a sheet mangle located in our main establishment which gives us the advantage of perfecting linen and bedding household garments like blankets, duvets, pillow cases, sheets, napkins, table linens and covers, and so much more that comes from the home. Knowing how busy life gets I’ve set up a few routes to hand deliver and pickup laundry and dry cleaning from my clients, it really makes the service seamless for them. Some of my clients have moved out of state but still ship me their dry cleaning and laundry because they understand the value of the work we provide for them and their families. With a history of a hefty celebrity clientele I cater to many of the Burbank studios with talk show hosts including Jay Leno, Conan and more. It’s a proud feeling to see our finished work on screen! Myself and my team included are very blessed to be able to provide those we serve with quality service.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I grew up very simple! I was born in Iran and moved here at the age of 9. I loved cars and enjoyed fixing and selling them. I played drums in a band for some time. I was always more of a “handy-man.” I met my wife while I was in my first band at the age of 16 and since then we’ve been together. We even started this company together. It’s been an exciting life to say the least, I’m very blessed!
