Meet Ray Li of Sene in La Brea

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ray Li.

Ray, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Sene started on a honeymoon. It was the first time my wife and I were able to fully unplug from work and everyday life and start dreaming about the future. Unlike VC-backed startups, we did nights and weekends until it got busy enough to go full-time. We put in our personal savings and haven’t raised any money from investors until the start of this year. It’s been a blast, seeing the brand grow from nothing to something that people love.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been full of bumps. As a first-time founder, I’ve made mistakes and learned from them. The biggest area of growth is intuition – over time with seeing certain things work and other things not. This ranges from what products to make, to who to partner with, to personnel decisions.

Sene – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Sene is the first brand to combine a designer line with an on-demand supply chain. Some of its items have never been custom-made before, and Sene does it with a dynamic pattern algorithm that converts body measurements into a technical clothing pattern. This ranges from suits to tees to casual jackets.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment has been the opening of our LA flagship store and seeing how it connects with people and actually meets a need for them. It’s when your brand becomes someone else’s passion that is exciting.
