Today we’d like to introduce you to Guy Camilleri.
Intimacy and the joy of an authentic moment are at the heart of Guy’s work. It is this rawness that has earned him the enviable reputation as Los Angeles’ premier acting coach to whom artists gravitate for assistance when in need of exploring the human condition without judgment and hidden agendas. It is with Guy that they find a sacred, dynamic, and safe place to explore and be challenged, to honor and express a unique point of view, and to experience what it feels like to be present and emotionally available moment-to-moment. As a poet and actor himself, Guy embraces that which he teaches, working from a place of strength and vulnerability.
But it wasn’t always this way for him. His journey began in 1992, when, starving for intimacy and lost in a deeply in-authentic life, a mentor suggested he take an acting class and begin writing. It was here that he found his calling and the sheer joy in connecting with what he would later define as an actor’s authentic moment. Acting saved his life, igniting an unbridled enthusiasm to share the power of his ‘raw’ acting approach which is best described as deeply intimate, authentic and driven by the moment.
Some twenty-five years later, his acting studio is frequented by Academy Award nominated actors, Emmy winning directors and writers of Academy Award winning movies, whose credits include Manchester By The Sea, The Usual Suspects, Captain America, Ray Donovan, Anamorph, Riverdale, Big Hero 6, West Wing, Monogamy, Gray’s Anatomy, Lakeview Terrace and NCSI. As an actor himself, the Los Angeles Times called out the brevity in his performance by comparing him to Paul Giamatti, and the LA Weekly labeled him “A Tour de Force” in his performance in Chinese Coffee, by Ira Lewis.
He is based at The Electric Lodge Theater in Venice California. His ‘raw acting’ studio is open to actors, writers, and directors alike where he encourages his students to dig deep in their craft, make honest and bold choices; take risks, break boundaries, and kick-start passion projects. As a result, screenplays, pilots and plays are frequently developed at his studio, with several projects produced and in pre-production.
Aside from the studio, he works one-on-one with private clients where he assists with audition prep, character development, and career consultations, along with traveling to private clients around the world when in need of his intensive assistance. Between his coaching work, he regularly performs in film, television and theater ‘walking the walk’ and ‘talking the talk’ or he can be found surfing the beaches of Southern California and Hawaii. In 2017, his first collection of short poems will be published called “L.O.A. (looseness of association)”.
Has it been a smooth road?
If it were all smooth, where would the obstacles/challenges be to evolve, fail and in the end grow as a human being. Suffering leads to increased compassion, increased compassion leads to a life filled with more self-love, love for others and respect for the human condition and infinite levels of humanity therein.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am an actor, acting coach and poet focused on helping people experience the intimacy of an authentic moment at my studio in Venice, California.
I specialize in creating an environment that allows actors, writers, directors and creatives from all walks of life to experience what it feels like to experience the intimacy of an authentic moment.
I teach, coach, nudge, urge and facilitate actors, writers and directors and creative individuals from all walks of life using the tools I’ve learned from studying with master teachers and from my own life experiences to have their unique voice heard… in other words, to start (or keep) ‘living out loud’.
Acting, writing and directing inform each other and when you create a safe and dynamic space for artists to explore these platforms, an amazing array of work comes out of the experience without chasing end results, Art (acting, writing, directing, public speaking) is a ‘now event’ and the end result of being in the moment is deeply satisfying, however it plays out, whether it’s sitting across from one person or affecting a group of individuals.
Clearly, what sets me apart is my ability to stay with (literally, emotionally, spiritually) with the artist across from me without the need to make it about me (manipulation, hidden agendas). The best actors are always the most generous actors and the best teachers know that the ‘student’ is really his/her own teacher. This is what I strive for, and selfishly, the high that I get when sustaining a deep level of intimacy is hard to match.
One of the things I’m known for is being on the hot pursuit of the truth, specifically, the person I’m coaching, his/her truth. By getting out of your own way and speaking your truth you get closer to ensuring that their unique voice will be heard. Your ‘point of view’ is the very thing we need to hear and I’m committed to making that happen in my studio, in workshops, on-set and during private coaching.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The culture, the ability to experience a vast array of people, places, events within minutes of each other… okay, sometimes hours of each other. The weather, the ocean (surfing), mountains (walks with my dog), food, art, music and intimate conversation.
The thing I like least is the cost of living is driving the very individuals that make all the things that I like about living in Los Angeles. I get that life moves on and in hope that art and those with the need to create will lead us as it has in the past.
