Today we’d like to introduce you to Rashard Marshell.
Rashard, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was doing hair in my head my entire life. It was only right to make the leap of faith, and I sought out to go to school, but I had a security job holding me back from making the best decision of my life. One night I woke up in the middle of the night and said tomorrow my life will change so I enrolled into hair school. After ten long months of working two jobs and maintaining school I was finally done.
I immediately started to build my career and it overflowed with clients. I was forced to join the real world of salon life. The salon I worked in was great but after a few in house hiccups, I knew it was time for me to soar and get my own…. but how does one save enough money to afford their own salon ? Work harder! Don’t sleep! And save everything you make and invest into yourself…. if I made 100 I saved 90 it was no turning back. Eight months after working In the salon I then opened my own that day was the last day I’d ever sleep building a strong professional and talented team is the biggest accomplishment to date I never wanted my salon to be uncomfortable or a place where people didn’t feel welcomed so I made sure my customer service was always on point. In doing this I have since opened 8 businesses to date: barbershops, clothing stores and more.
But I knew hair was my niche, and having salons all over town was ideal, but the distance and need to be there was not making logical sense, so I started to gather all the buildings on the same street as me, so as to date I have 3 of the best salons, barbershops, and natural twists location on Wilshire and couldn’t be more happier to provide my community with relatable and professional services and be able to employ the community.
I come from a family of truck drivers and stylists, so growing up I figured I would be a truck driver but I wasn’t scared to take the driver seat and let my journey take me further. I just want young people to know anywhere no matter how much you make, how much schooling you have no matter your age it’s never over or too late. But I want to help them succeed at all of their goals.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My biggest struggle was being a young African American male with no business sense and trying to survive or even get started out on Wilshire Blvd. I had to reshape, regrow, and groom a lot of people to take them to the next level, and many adults don’t like change. A major struggle was getting people to see I’m not compromising my character or competing but trying to uplift and grow everyday and use my clients and stylists as my canvas.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the RVM Salons, Cutz, Twist story. Tell us more about the business.
The thing that sets RVM apart is that we are professional, skilled, and our customer service and attention to detail is impeccable…. we do all types of hair, all hair types if you name it I have someone who can do it men, women and kids with over 70 stylists, barbers, and braiders. RVM is known for getting the job done. I’m proud to be able to know we control how good we can make people look and feel.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck I believe in hard work and prayer. If you believe and you work hard, great results will come. Luck is for people who don’t want to work! If I had to use the word luck, I would say I’m lucky enough to always be in the right place at the right time and when buildings open, I know how to get them and I’m lucky to have an amazing team.
