Meet Randy Lehrman of Real Genius Entertainment in West Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Randy Lehrman.

Randy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I fell into the Mobile DJ business by accident when I was discovered at my sister’s own Bat-Mitzvah years ago…I do over 400 voices and impersonations and as I was hamming it up for the DJ, he told me had had just started his own company and wanted me to come work for him. Funny enough he wanted me to be the sidekick for his #1 guy pre-famous, actor, Paul Rudd. Paul and I were a DJ team for 5 years until he landed a role in the movie “Clueless” That bumped me to the top spot under the boss…I worked there a little bit longer before deciding that my own style and personality would be better served with me running my own company.

As a working actor, comedian, improv, and TV guy…I decided to take those performance skills and create a business based on personal service, creativity, and events that are second to none. Specializing in Bar-Mitzvahs, Weddings, Birthdays, and more…I based my whole business on personal service. I am a different animal than most of my peers who mostly just email their clients pricing or videos. I go out to every (serious & interested) clients home, personally for them and the Guest of honor to get to know me.

I started out as one (1) and have grown to 30 performers; MCs, DJs, Dancers, Lighting techs, PhotoBooth Ops etc. Each event is customized for every clients wishes. I definitely would also note that I am a driving force at these events in terms of managing how they go and running them the night of. I’d say 80% Gordon Ramsay, 10% Child Psychologist, and 10% Comedian.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been lots of ups but definitely some downs. Although I had great training from my original mentor, that was only on the talent and performer side. I had to learn all the business stuff from scratch.

In addition, the DJ business has grown exponentially since its inception and so many DJs have at some point ripped off my jokes, schtick, or different things I do at events. So more and more so I not only have to raise the bar, I have to make what I do exclusive to clients so it’s fresh every time.

Finally, whether it’s moms of Bar-Mitzvah kids, or Brides & Grooms everyone can be very specific about their vision. Sometimes it’s hard to explain that the vision doesn’t always match what works at a party. I always do my best to have both worlds meet and have everyone happy.

Please tell us about Real Genius Entertainment.
Real Genius Entertainment is a full service Mobile DJ company. We specialize in Bar-Mitzvahs, Weddings, Birthdays, and Corporate events. We’re certainly known for sending a team of great performers who put on an interactive non-stop show on for 4 hours to keep every of all ages dancing all night.

The thing that I am most proud about my company is who I have working for me. Unlike most DJ companies that just sub out their work, all of my DJs are performers. They have the mentality of a fun camp counselor/break-dancing/stand-up comic/great human being. All of my “Real Genius All-Stars” (as I call them) have not only become the face of my company next to me, but they have become my best friends and family. So not only do my clients get an outstanding team of MCs, DJs, and Dancers, but they get a team of people who hangs out on a regular basis. We see each other a ton outside of work as I throw parties at my home BBQing, doing pool parties, going on vacations, dinners, and having fun as a group all over LA.

Aside from that, what sets me apart from all the other DJ companies is my personal service. All of my clients get me as their planner or their “party expert,” if you will. I drive to them to introduce myself, show video, and give them package ideas…and certainly they all get an in-home visit to finalize the event where I personally create a professional timeline with all the music, interactive games, and details that make that event everything the client wants.
