Today we’d like to introduce you to Ralph Vazquez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Like many people, I got into photography by picking up a camera and learning that I loved taking pictures. For me this happened at the young age of 14. Back then, I was developing my own black and white film and making prints at home. By my mid 20’s, when I started having children, I enjoyed photographing them all the time. I took pictures of them just about any moment they were awake, while at play, eating, crying, on the potty… you name it. I always looked forward to covering every family event and taking our family portraits too. Eventually, the word got around and soon I was being hired to do family portraits for friends as well. In 2010, I decided I would turn my hobby into a business and Portrait Builders was born. Since I started Portrait Builders Photography we have explored many avenues of photography including school portraiture, youth sports, weddings, family portraiture and even some Boudoir!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not! I don’t think there is such thing as a smooth road. Every road has obstacles and challenges. For me, I’ve struggled with marketing my business and being a “salesperson”. I think anyone operating a small business will tell you that you have to wear many hats and it can be overwhelming at times.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Portrait Builders Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
Portrait Builders Photography specializes in “people photography”. We cover it all …weddings, engagement portraits, children portraiture, school portraits and just about anything our customers want to throw at us. While many other photographers specialize in just weddings or just family portraits, we do it all.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in bad luck. In life, there is only hard work and the good luck of being at the right place and the right time.
