Meet Rachel de Rougemont of The Lady Tigra in Echo Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel de Rougemont.

Rachel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in New York and raised in Hollis, Queens at the dawn of Hip-hop. My family relocated to Miami when I was in 7th grade, just as the Miami Bass scene was starting to take off. By high school, I was in a rap duo called L’Trimm which launched my career in entertainment. By my early 20s, I was part of Miami Beach’s burgeoning club scene and eventually moved back to New York to manage night clubs, all while still making music. In 2007 the opportunity to make music full time presented itself in Los Angeles causing me to move and never look back. 2008 saw the release of my first solo album “Please Mr. Boombox” to critical acclaim. I’ve just signed a new deal with my current project, Tigra & SPNCR, which combines the styles, sounds and years of experience in the music and entertainment world shared between my partner in the group and I.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t always been an easy road. Being one of the first female rap duos to chart and due to our young ages (I was 15 and Bunny was 16 when we signed), we often had to fight to be taken seriously but it taught us to be resilient and advocate for ourselves. By the time I was ready to re-enter the music industry as an adult, I had fully formed ideas about who I was as an artist. I moved across the country, away from the comfort and security of my family, because I knew that I was willing to take a risk to do what I loved.

The Lady Tigra – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am The Lady Tigra, a singer/songwriter most known for being one half of the group L’Trimm which had the 80s/90s hit Cars That Go Boom. Since then, I’ve done co-writes for other artists, written jingles for commercials, appeared in award-winning films and tv shows and been sponsored by clothing and makeup brands but hip-hop is still my first love. Cars With The Boom has had a resurgence with Gen Z, recently going viral on TikTok and Instagram and it makes me feel proud that my music stands the test of time and resonates across generations.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
A healthy love of how you’re living your life is the definition of success. I’m happy to wake up in the nest that I’ve built, next to my little animals. I’m so excited to go to the studio and create. My friends make me laugh and my family supports me. I go to bed looking back at the hidden surprises I’ve experienced during the day like pleasant interactions with strangers or discovering that a plant that I’ve raised from seed has flowered for the first time. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude that I get to wake up and do it again, even when I’m going through the most trying times. The fact that I can carry on smiling, laughing and singing is how I define my own success.
