Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Bowman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a professional Aerialist originally from Australia. I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to pursue greater employment opportunities. I have been fortunate enough to perform with companies such as Cirque Du Soleil and for clients such as Michael Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor and Van Halen. In 2012 I met my aerial partner Brett Womack and together we formed the company Womack and Bowman and have spent the last 5 years touring our duo aerial acts across the world as well as appearing in numerous films, commercials and television shows. In 2013 we opened an aerial dance studio in Los Angeles: Womack and Bowman – The Loft which is located in Glendale, California. Along with the 8-10 aerial instructors that we employ, we have been privileged to share our love of aerial arts as well as to train the aerial performers of tomorrow.
Has it been a smooth road?
Since opening the studio it has been a challenge to balance running a business with training/rehearsing for performances. I have had to learn to be extremely efficient with my time and stay focused on the most pressing tasks.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Womack and Bowman story. Tell us more about the business.
Here at Womack and Bowman – The Loft we take great pride in our artistic approach to aerial arts instruction. Our studio is known for its high level of instruction so much so that we usually have at least one professional aerialist taking class on any given day! Most of our classes incorporate a musical element, where the students perform an informal ‘routine’ on the aerial apparatus at the end of class consisting of the tricks and combinations that they learn that day. This not only builds stamina and endurance but ensures that students experience a sense of accomplishment and artistic fulfillment.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The aerial arts industry is continuing to expand with hundreds of studios popping up all over the world every year. Many of these studios are hybrids of pole dance, fitness and even martial arts! It is an exciting time to be an aerial educator, that’s for sure!
I believe that more studios will be looking to enhance their teacher training programs to help facilitate the need for more classes and higher level of instruction. I also believe that online learning will increase as students in more remote locations feel the need to expand their knowledge.
