Meet Prymrose Burgos of Headway Boxing in Eagle Rock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Prymrose Burgos.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Prymrose. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story began when my dad was diagnosed with brain cancer. Not the most inspiring start, but it is how Headway became what it is today. During my father’s treatment and after his passing, I had boxing as a form of therapy. I would dedicate one hour of my day to myself and hit the bags to let my frustration out. After I quit my 9 to 5 job of 15 years, I still had boxing to relieve my stress. I was lost and discouraged trying to find another job, but yet again boxing would change all that. I turned to family and friends and pitched the idea of me opening up my own business. They were 100% on board with me, and so I started my journey with Headway. I researched and talked to people that currently owned gyms. Found amazing people that mentor me along the way, but most importantly I had my family to help me build it.

Today, I’m proud to have turned that idea into a positive family oriented gym. We have members of all ages, each with a personal story. So I greet them all by first name basis, and if they are new, I make sure to introduce them to everyone in class. We all have our own personal goals or struggles, and it only takes one moment to change its course. So with my team, we keep them motivated, offer a variety of classes, challenge them, and root for them. Headway is my pay it forward story, I hope it can help them the way boxing has helped me.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s definitely not been a smooth road, but it has been a fast ride. For instance, I had a business partner going into this. Opening day was in two weeks and backed out without a notice. I had to act fast and restructured my business plan. Fortunately, my family was there to help me push through it. We opened on schedule, and it was a success! Along the way, there have been other bumps on the road, but it is all part of my growth. I was told that the day it gets too comfortable, is the day I should be afraid. So, I expect many more challenges will arise, but those same obstacles are what drives me to keep going, keep making headway.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Headway Boxing – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Many boxing gyms can feel intimidating, male-dominated, or too strict. Also, not many gyms are ran by a female, let alone a boxing gym. Headway Boxing is an affordable family-oriented gym. Offering personal training and group classes in boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, strength training, women only, and kids classes. We welcome all levels, all ages, all walks of life. I have four amazing dedicated trainers, including myself, that are very knowledgable in their craft. Who will teach you the fundamentals, proper form, and help you reach your goals. Our incredible members that train day and night, rain or shine, hot or cold; are transforming and challenging their own expectations. We’ve been part of community events, and have taught free classes for neighboring schools. Headway has created a small positive place that motivate, support, and empower each other. We’re working on adding special needs classes, for example for autistic kids, and hope that we can expand in the near future.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
As mentioned, Headway is a family own business. My brother Myro has helped me built and create what I had envisioned. He’s the creative soul that helps me run day to day business. My mentors Mike and Michelle, who guide me when the road is not going smooth. My trainers Steven for bringing life to this space, I wouldn’t have been able to open without your help, Kwik and Brian, who inspire their students with their passion. My friends and members (too many to name), they are my biggest cheerleaders in what I’m trying to achieve. JVC for mentioning our family. Nate Lyles for capturing our vision. Lastly to my mom Merly and my dad Paul in heaven, and rest of the family Migie, Myrrha, Byron, Megyn, and Alex for being my biggest supporters, for never stop believing in me. They are my Headway Family.
