Meet Prince Sampang of Rosewood Cutters in Beverly Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Prince Sampang.

Prince, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Barber in Los Angeles born in the Philippines raised in New Jersey and now resides and working in (Rosewood Barber) Los Angeles for over 11 years now. I got inspired by my brother Francis Sampang who’s also a barber for 17 years and also one of the owners of Rosewood Barber and now we have 3 locations in Los Angeles.

High School is when the first time I held the scissors and clippers. I started with a makeshift barber setup station at my parents’ basement back in Piscataway New Jersey. I was also big fan of the movie “Barbershop” starring Ice cube and Cedric the Entertainer. I would practice for fun on friends and uncle’s and cut their hair for free. During that period, I spent most of my summer vacations to Los Angeles working part-time at my brother’s barbershop in Bellflower our Rosewood Barber’s first flagship that was built back in 1954. I was the helper at the Barbershop. I enjoy the day to day and the different people I meet at the barbershop. After contemplating on what to do with as a career, I decided to pursue Barbering in Los Angeles. I was fortunate enough to serve the working people of Los Angeles in the city of Bellflower.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My first year was definitely a rough road building a steady clientele and also trying to keep up on a fast pace barbershop and still achieve a quality haircut was tough but also rewarding. I was blessed to be surrounded by barbers that has been in the business for over 15 to 30 years. I learned that in this profession being skilled is only an icing to the cake. You have to love barbering and you have to be great with people skills. Improving our standards of customer service is what I always thrived in the highest level.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Rosewood Cutters – what should we know?
Rosewood Barber was built in 1954; we specialized on traditional men’s haircut and straight-edge razor fades. I’m one of the barbers and also marketing manager and partner of the Rosewood Cutters Brand. Through barbering, I was very lucky to work with great talented barbers at Rosewood. We were invited at Fashion Trade shows in Vegas and events around Los Angeles to showcase our talented barbers and the brand. Along the journey, I was able to serve a few celebs and athletes and producers and brand owners like Gucci Mane, Ed Sheeran, Toby Maguire, Brian Greegberg, Majid Jordan, DVSN, Zab Juhda, Stanley Johnson, Jahlil Okafor, Boi1da, Illmind, Estevan Oriol, Bobby Hundreds Mark Gonzales and more.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My brother Francis Sampang was one of my great mentors along the way he told me to keep pushing even on the rough days at the shop. My parents also played a major role in my life they taught me to work hard and be thankful for every opportunity life brings us.
