Today we’d like to introduce you to Poe.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a lifelong artist. I have been singing, drawing, dancing, making videos, and more for as long as I can remember. I have always been intrigued by visuals, captivated by sound, and interested in the stranger, unexplained parts of life. This leads to what some have classified my “dark” or “grunge” type aesthetic. I am blessed and grateful to have had a childhood where I was able to freely explore my artistic hobbies and interests. My father is an extremely talented artist, and my mother grew up as a dancer and also taught me to embrace my intuition, which helped guide my artistic endeavors. I began attending a state university for a psychology degree before switching to a fine arts major and eventually transferring to MassArt in Boston. I didn’t finish school, but I did learn a lot and decided to keep learning new things on my own as I worked different jobs throughout the years. Now I have been focusing on digital art, specifically graphic design and video editing. It’s been very rewarding to troubleshoot different ideas as I go and add to my portfolio that way. I really just love all forms of art so exploring different media will always be a part of my life.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Everyone faces struggles in their journey, the tower falls and then you rebuild. A lot of my struggles feel very personal in a sense where I stand in my own way. Mental health is something that has tested me time and time again and I am still developing a working understanding of how to cope and exist in the world.
Please tell us more about your art.
As a digital artist, I offer graphic design services including logo design, album cover and tracklist art, event flyers, custom portraits or avi’s, and the list continues. I have also been creating lyric videos and custom animations for local musicians. Basically, if you have an idea you would like brought to life visually, I am here for it. I really enjoy collaborating with other artists of different disciplines who have a strong idea they want to see created. I have worked with many local musicians, and since I also love music, I have found much success in creating certain textures in my cover arts and lyric visuals to match the vibe of the artist and the song. I love learning new techniques so I try to take on any project, even if it’s something I haven’t necessarily done before but feel confident in executing. Essentially, I am willing to make it work because I enjoy seeing something evolve before my eyes. I think this is a factor that sets me apart. I am always ready to talk back and forth with the artist to make necessary changes and ensure that they feel in tune with the final product we create. Every project and collaboration is its own universe and that’s where I have been able to find and execute so many dope ideas.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Hmm, this is an interesting question. The definition of luck is “success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one’s own actions,” so I guess this is a question of whether or not I believe in fate or free will? Haha.. honestly serendipitous moments do happen sometimes and when a cool opportunity comes your way out of seemingly nowhere, you gotta grab it. That’s what I’ve learned and am still continuing to practice. Even if you don’t always feel 100% ready to do something, the bigger point is that you get into it and try anyway. You’ll probably succeed. And if you don’t, you’ll definitely learn.
