Meet Pjay Phillips

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pjay Phillips.

Pjay, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story is a simple one, full of love, pain, restorative, and renewed energy. My journey as an artist has definitely been tailored just for me.The progeny of proud southern parents, yet California born and bred, I’m a remarkable combination of comfortable-in-my -own-skins talent. No Diva, no entourage, no pretentiousness. Just hard work, sacrifice and a deep understanding of the commitment required for getting the job done. My eyes were first opened as an artist when I saw a symphony sponsored by the public school system.

Without that first glance into the arts, I would have never discovered the real me. I started my journey as a dancer predominately in Musical Theatre, then to a choreographer, (awarded a critic circle award for choreography).

From there to an actress and singer. Professional training in the fine arts with a BFA in Musical Theatre gave me the confidence and pushed me further along in finding my voice as a singer and helped me to be prepared for my singing residencies in France, Taipei, Canada, and Morocco just to name a few.

Currently, I have been spending time songwriting, along with some amazing Co-writers, and completed my first self-produced single ‘Holiday True” sang in French and English. I recently completed my first self-produced EP entitled “Love Come Through” an EP of original songs inspired by loves ups and downs. One of my favorite lyrics in the title track are “each time I embrace love like its new”. I truly feel these lyrics represent how we should view love and the world each time we embark upon change and adversity.

You are cordially invited to take a listen on all electronic venues as well as traditional copies.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe my biggest struggle and one of my most challenging one was to leave my hometown and family “The Bay Area” to commit completely to my artistry. Part two of that road was to move to Morocco to sing Jazz Music, which was greatly encouraged by my dear sister who said: “Stars have to travel”. In Morocco, I was faced with huge cultural differences and felt every moment of being alone in a foreign country. I loved every moment of it. I grew as a singer but moreover as an artist. They loved my music, and that warmed my heart.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am a performer for television, film, choreography and singer. My most current specialization is singing and acting, but I do utilize my skills as a performer/mentor to help other budding artist learn how to be business savvy and be an artist simultaneously.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The biggest part of success is the willingness to do the work. That is something that I am driven by. I can rest knowing that I have put the work in toward my art and from there I leave the rest to my higher power to bring forth what is for me.
