Today we’d like to introduce you to Pilar Muñoz.
Pilar, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion for rhythmic gymnastics started in Spain back in 1982. I began competing at the age of 7, winning several and consecutive times the State and Regional Championships. I competed nationally for almost 10 years. After I graduated from the University of Granada, Spain, I moved to the U.S. and continued my studies in Physiological Science at the University of Arizona. My profound childhood passion brought me back to my roots and, I started coaching my own rhythmic gymnastics team here in LA. I have been coaching and choreographing for level 4 through elite since 1995.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When you work with competitive gymnasts in this field, the road to the summit is never smooth. I encountered problems finding the regulated facility to carry out our 19 to 22 hours weekly practice for this sport. This created a sense of instability in my gym and few talented gymnasts moved to a different team. Parents’ expectations have also been extraordinary high, which has created emotional tension on the competitive team. Often these parents have been seeking for quick results, like a magic potion, not understanding that it takes time to build a strong solid gymnast.
Please tell us about LA Ritmica.
We are a gym specialized in the sport of rhythmic gymnastics. We at La Ritmica are inspired by the vision of providing a professional, rigorous, and yet caring rhythmic gymnastics program. We accomplish this through positive and challenging teaching. The goal of our program is to challenge mind and body through physical activity that requires hand-eye coordination, flexibility, strength, and balance. Our training system respects each child’s unique mental and physical developmental stages as she progresses in the sport and achieves her potential. We offer positive experience geared to success for all our children involved in both fields.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from my childhood is having paella every Sunday with my family.
